STAR TREK 4 with the Kelvin Timeline Crew Is Officially Dead Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

Despite nearly a decade of false starts, it seems like the adventures of Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and his Enterprise crew are indeed over. According to a report from Variety (via TrekCore), the new heads of Paramount definitely have more Star Trek films planned, but they won’t feature any of the players from J.J. Abrams’ rebooted Kelvin Timeline. So no “Star Trek 4.” Despite several scripts and directors attached, from Quentin Tarantino to Matt Shakman, Paramount never found anything that clicked. Here’s the exact phrasing from the original report:

The hope is to have a fresh Star Trek movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot.

Even though this is disappointing news, it’s not that surprising. The original cast was contracted for three films, and their asking price has certainly gone up. Especially for folks like Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana, now an Oscar winner. It would double the budget. If they had returned, it would have been after a longer gap than the one between the end of TOS and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Add to that, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds already has popular versions of young Spock, Kirk, Uhura, etc. Why have competing versions? Especially if a new Star Trek: Year One spin-off actually happens.

Although we think this is indeed the end of the road for the Kevlin timeline Kirk’s Enterprise, we have a feeling it’s not the end of the Kelvin timeline itself. It would make sense for Paramount to reboot Star Trek: The Next Generation, set in the Kelvin timeline’s future. And maybe with some actors (most likely, Zachary Quinto’s Spock) providing connective tissue in cameo form. But we really don’t know what Paramount has in store for the future of Star Trek on the big screen. But it seems increasingly likely we won’t see the crew J.J. Abrams recruited back in 2009 all together on the bridge of the Enterprise again.
