The United States recently exported one of its most important TV institutions across the Atlantic with the premiere of SNL UK. It took 51 seasons for that to happen. It only took 20 seasons for one of the UK’s best shows to conquer our shores. (Sorry, not “seasons.” We mean “series.”) Taskmaster has long been the best television program most Americans don’t know about. That will, thankfully, change when its new season premieres on YouTube next month. And the season/series 21 trailer for Taskmaster promises it will be a colorful—and wonderfully confusing—introduction for its new audience.
If you’ve never heard about or seen Taskmaster before, we are so very happy to introduce you to this truly perfect reality gameshow. It features contestants trying to earn points from Greg Davies based on their performance during a variety of challenging, funny, and absurd tasks assigned and guided by his assistant, “Little” Alex Horne.
While that description is technically correct, it can’t come close to conveying the wonderful madness of Taskmaster. This is a show that is so much more than you can expect in all the best ways.
The show’s 21st installment will feature a familiar face for newcomers from the US. Kumail Nanjiani will try to impress Davies and best his four fellow competitors, Amy Gledhill, Armando Iannucci, Joanna Page, and Joel Dommett. He follows in the footsteps of trailblazer Jason Mantzoukas. He was the first American-based star to travel across the ocean to star on the show. Desiree Burch was the first American.
Will Nanjiani prove victorious? We’ll find out when Taskmaster‘s ten episode 21st series premieres at 5pm EST on YouTube all over the world on April 4.
This Taskmasters trailer might make you think it debuts in September, but that’s just how other countries do it. That change will be the least confusing thing about the show when you start watching.
