On One Piece, but especially Netflix’s live-action One Piece, Sanji often feels like a character full of boundless optimism. His unfailing charm and good cheer are a hallmark of the character’s adapted version. And Taz Skylar so perfectly brings that aspect of Sanji to life with a blend of his well-honed acting, infectious smile, and ready wink. But in One Piece season two, Sanji falters a little when faced with the reality of Nami’s serious illness. And that leads to an intensely emotional, but deeply beautiful, moment, where Sanji peels back a few of his outwardly cheerful layers to reveal vulnerable parts of his tragic past with Nami. (Though it must be noted that, in a fabulous moment of character-building through acting, even through tears, Sanji smiles.) In celebration of One Piece season two, we sat down with Taz Skylar to discuss bringing such a nuanced scene to life and ended up learning some new details that make the moment even more incredible. Skylar actually connected his own mom into Sanji’s One Piece season two moment, paying a secret, gorgeous homage to her.

Sanji fans from the One Piece anime and manga will know the full extent of Sanji’s tragic backstory as it connects to his blood family. While season one of the live-action didn’t really touch on it, in season two, Sanji entrusts Nami with an aching part of his history, his tender, but short-lived, relationship with his mom. A young Sanji loved his mother, who inspired his dream of cooking from the start, but lost her to illness too quickly.
Skylar notes, “It’s so rare that, as an actor, you get to do a page and a half of text. Or I think it’s so rare that you get trusted with a page and a half of text that is not interrupted at all by any flashbacks, visual aids, or anything but your ability to talk to another human being with genuine intention.” It was up to Skylar and his scene-mate, Emily Rudd, who plays Nami, to carry the scene on the strength of their pure acting and emotional connection. And, from my perspective, it was immensely effective and completely crushing.

And Skylar admits it was an intense ask, but one that was helped by the shared bond between the actors. “I definitely felt a lot of pressure of like, ‘Damn, don’t make this minute and a half the most boring part of the show, bro.’ But it was really special to be able to look into Emily’s eyes and say the speech and have her look at me with love in her eyes and understanding.” It was also extra special because this Sanji scene about mom and son was performed with Skylar’s own mom on set. He adds emphatically, “And we also shot that scene on my birthday, and my mom was in the tent watching scenes.”
Sometimes, acting can be all about leaving behind the person you are to slip into another skin. But the best acting also taps into a vein of truth and real human emotion to bring characters to life in a way that resonates in our own hearts. And that’s exactly what happened with Skylar in this scene. Rudd, also part of our interview, reminds him, “And you used your mom’s accent!”
“I used my mom’s voice!” Skylar crows with true delight, “I’m so glad you remember that!”

He explains that he homaged his own mom within the dialogue about Sanji’s, “There’s this bit where he references his mother, and there’s this bit where he quotes his mother there, and I used my mother’s voice and accent to quote that line. It will forever sound like my mom.”
The rest of the cast agrees it is an incredibly sweet gesture, and we do too. And undoubtedly, imbuing his own mom into Sanji’s mom is what makes the dialogue ring so true, melting our hearts and bringing tears to our eyes. You can hear Sanji’s mom, kissed by Taz Skyler’s own, when Sanji says, “Oh my little prince, what have you brought for me today?” in One Piece season two episode eight. And you can really hear the accent change in Skylar’s voice during that moment.
We love how beautiful the moment is, for both Sanji and his mother, and Taz Skyler and his own mom. And we adore how it lets us see the character of Sanji just a little bit more clearly, tears and smiles combining together to form one excellent whole.
One Piece season two is now streaming on Netflix.
