Ted Wheeler is the guy we see hanging around the background while his kids are out fighting monsters from another dimension. Since season one, he’s been napping away in ignorant bliss as the Upside Down enacts its wrath on Hawkins. While we do enjoy his quippy remarks and stoic presence, we are dying to see more from him. Will Stranger Things 5 FINALLY be the time we see Ted thrown off his couch and into the line of fire? In an interview with us at Nerdist, actor Joe Chrest teases the possibility, hinting that Ted Wheeler would finally play a bigger role in Stranger Things 5.
We all know that stereotypical, perfectly checked-out ’80s dad. Ted Wheeler is exactly that. Somehow able to stay just outside of everything, Ted has been there since day one. Ahead of Stranger Things 5‘s release, we talked with Chrest to see what more might be in store for Ted Wheeler, the sarcastic character we know and love.
“The fans who’ve followed the show and Ted are in for a real surprise this season. Possibly even shocked, dare I say,” Chrest said. “I wish I could say more about it, but I think there are some hints out there of what might be to come…” Well, if Ted Wheeler being passive and unconnected in Stranger Things 5 has been the norm, than a bigger, more active role feels like what would shock us.
There has been no shortage of speculation over the Wheelers’ role in season five, Holly and Karen included. Netflix recently did an ad campaign with Target to promote the new season. Chrest teases that there might be some hints hidden within that point to Ted’s role in Stranger Things 5.
The clip above shows Ted in his usual habitat: flipping through channels whilst perched on the couch. However, there are some interesting details. One of the channels he flips through is a clear image of the Mind Flayer. In the next shot, he turns his head to notice the fridge magnets fall to the floor. If what Chrest said is true, and these are actual clues, could it be a sign that Ted will finally start to notice the influence of the Upside Down in Stranger Things 5?
It can’t be a coincidence that Chrest was chosen out of everyone to star in this campaign. Why him? Nothing is ever without purpose, so I’d venture to say this might very well prove that Ted will play a bigger part in Stranger Things 5 and will link him to all the happenings he’s slept on (literally) so far.
Will Ted Wheeler Die in Season Five of Stranger Things?
Of course, the biggest question when it comes to Ted Wheeler’s role in season five is as follows: Will he die? Plenty of fan theories put not only him, but Holly and Karen in danger, too. Many center around the idea that the full title for season five, chapter two is “The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler.” If that’s the case, what if Ted Wheeler dies as a sacrifice to protect his daughter? It would create one heck of a rise to heroism.
Is this evidence compelling enough to prove Ted Wheeler will assume a bigger role in Stranger Things 5? It’s gotta be, right? I mean, you can’t go five whole seasons being that unaware of everything going on. Maybe the Duffers will surprise us. Personally, I think season five is the time we see Ted finally pick up a weapon and square off against the Upside Down.
