The company announced plans to launch USD₮ on RGB, a next-generation protocol designed to issue digital assets natively on Bitcoin.
This move allows users to hold and transact USD₮ directly on the world’s most secure and decentralized blockchain, combining the stability of Tether with Bitcoin’s unmatched security.
RGB Brings Native Assets to Bitcoin
RGB recently reached mainnet with its 0.11.1 release. Unlike traditional Bitcoin transactions, which are primarily for sending and receiving BTC, RGB enables private, scalable, and user-controlled issuance of assets. This means stablecoins like USD₮ can exist alongside Bitcoin, allowing users to manage multiple assets within the same wallet. RGB also supports offline transfers, giving users more control and flexibility over their funds.
By integrating USD₮ on RGB, Tether unlocks faster and more private payments directly on Bitcoin. Users can send and receive USD₮ without relying on intermediaries, which mirrors a broader trend in the industry toward self-sovereign finance. For instance, Lightning Network has already shown the demand for Bitcoin-based payments with low fees and instant settlement. Tether’s move builds on this momentum by offering stable-value transfers on the same network.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, said, “Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels truly native, lightweight, private, and scalable. With RGB, USD₮ gains a powerful new pathway on Bitcoin, reinforcing our belief in Bitcoin as the foundation of a freer financial future.”
More About Tether
Tether has updated its transition plan for five older blockchains: Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand. Back in July 2024, Tether said it would stop redemptions and freeze USD₮ on these blockchains starting September 1, 2025. After hearing feedback from the communities,

Tether has decided not to freeze the smart contracts, meaning users can still move tokens between wallets. However, Tether will no longer issue or redeem tokens on these networks, so they won’t carry the same official support as other Tether tokens.
