We were shocked by how much we enjoyed the supremely gory, delightfully weird 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The Nia DaCosta-helmed second entry in Sony’s 28 Years Later trilogy ended up an energetic, thought-provoking, but above all fun horror adventure stood apart from the other movies in the series. But lest we forget, we still have a third part coming. Just as the end of last year’s 28 Years Later teased the gang of marauders named Jimmy who would take center stage in The Bone Temple, the latter film has a scene giving us a brief glimpse at the final film. And who should it feature but the person you probably all think it is.

Of course! Who else would it be? At the end of the movie, after Spike (Alfie Williams) and the newly liberated psychopath Kelly (Erin Kellyman) leave the son of Old Nick, Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) to die horribly, we cut to black. The next series of shots show us a peaceful, isolated farmhouse. Cutting inside, we see a girl sitting at a desk, deep in study. Quickly joining her is, we assume, her father…none other than Jim, the main character from 2002’s 28 Days Later, played once again by now-Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy.
Now, this shouldn’t really come as a shock. Murphy has been an executive producer on both new movies thus far. We also had tacit awareness he would feature prominently in the third part of the 28 Years Later trilogy. So having him show up here, especially as a lead-in to that third movie, makes perfect sense. It also allows for a little bit of pointed political commentary.

In the brief scene, Jim is quizzing his daughter on the end of WWII and the benefits of not totally wrecking the losing side of a war. He cites the forced bankruptcy of Germany following World War I as a main instigator of World War II. Since this is an alternate history movie, with the rage virus wrecking the UK and parts of mainland Europe for nearly 30 years, Jim makes the sly joke that fascism hasn’t and wouldn’t return. (Howls of derisive laughter from the crowd.)
At the end of the scene, Jim’s daughter—whom we can probably assume he had with Selina from the first movie—hears something outside. The pair grab guns and head out to see. Through binoculars, Jim clocks Spike and Kelly running from infected. Jim’s daughter asks if they should help, and he says of course they should. This then leads into the theme music from 28 Days Later.
After the sheer zaniness of the preceding film, it’s a strangely grounding moment to see Jim again. He seems totally normal (as much as possible), and though we don’t see if he and his daughter have anyone else, they at least have each other. It’s nice. Now, whether it stays nice is for us to see in the next movie. However many days later that might be.
