It’s one thing to find yourself in a dangerous environment where you can’t trust anyone. It’s an entirely different, far more terrifying thing to get locked up with a bunch of zealots willing to do anything for their false prophet. Even when it means covering up his murder. Not a great situation for anyone. Obviously. But as far as thriller-horror movies go, it’s a pretty fantastic premise. That’s the nightmare three young Black men will find themselves trying to escape in Lionsgate‘s The Gates. The film’s first trailer shows how they got locked in a gated white community where everyone will do anything they can to protect a killer preacher played by the late James Van Der Beek.
Look, I’m sure some gated communities are very nice places. I’m sure lots of kind, loving people live in them. But it’s simply none of my business to find out which ones are which. Evil people cloaking themselves in religion so they can justify violence is a genuine nightmare. The three innocent men in The Gates will have it far worse, if this trailer is anything to go by. They have no reason to believe anyone will believe them that they saw James Van Der Beek’s beloved white pastor, one with a god-like hold over his flock, kill a young woman.
In addition to its trailer, here’s the full synopsis of The Gates:
The Gates is Burr’s second feature, following his debut, the supernatural thriller Muse. The Gates follows three college students — Derek, Kevin, and Tyon (Gooding, Smith, and Powers) on a road trip gone wrong, as the three young men take an ill-advised shortcut through a remote gated community, where they find themselves trapped behind the walls after witnessing a murder. Over the course of the night, they find themselves blamed, hunted, and fractured by their own differing belief systems, while the perpetrator—James Van Der Beek, at his most charming and terrifying—emerges as the cunning patriarch that holds theentire community under his influence.
The Gates comes from director John Burr (Muse). It stars Mason Gooding (Scream), Algee Smith (Judas and the Black Messiah), and Keith Powers (The Perfect Find) as the three friends whose road trip goes very, very wrong. The film is also is one of two remaining projects featuring James Van Der Beek that will debut after his recent death at just 48. The other will be a recurring role in Prime Video’s Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle. For fans of James Van Der Beek, it will be nice to see the late actor perform again, at least a couple more times.

We would not want to find ourselves trapped inside these gates. But we do want to see those young men escape. We also want to see James Van Der Beek on the big screen one last time. We’ll (hopefully) get to do both when The Gates arrives in select theaters on March 13.
