Are those hearts that are painting the air? They sure are if The Mighty Nein‘s Jester has anything to say about it. Longtime Critters will know that the love affair between Laura Bailey’s Jester and Travis Willingham’s Fjord Stone is one of the most beautiful and romantic in all of Critical Role‘s history. But while we may have believed it was love at first sight (for Jester, anyway), Critical Role fans never actually got to see that first sight take place in The Mighty Nine campaign. When Critical Role Campaign 2 began, Jester and Fjord had actually already known one another for a month. Jester and Fjord’s first meeting has been described by Bailey and Willingham and even briefly depicted in Dark Horse’s The Mighty Nein Origins: Fjord Stone comic. But in Prime Video’s The Mighty Nein animated series adaptation, we finally get to see a fleshed-out version of Jester and Fjord’s first meeting. Get your hearts ready, you’re going to need them.

How Do Jester and Fjord First Meet on Episode 2 of The Mighty Nein Series?
Fjord and Jester’s first meeting in The Mighty Nein series happens during episode two, and it is a comedy of errors and accidental protection. Here’s what takes place during their meet-cute.
Jester Causes a Little Trouble and Fjord Is in the Right Place at the Right Time
After a devastating shipwreck, the seeming loss of his memory, and a betrayal by his crewmate Sabian, Fjord finds himself in the city of Nicodranas, seeking shelter and food. It just so happens that Jester is causing a little trouble in that very city at the same time. Annoyed that her mother would be occupied with the pompous and powerful Lord Sharpe and thus unable to spend time with her, Jester humiliates the man in front of a crowd he’s addressing in an official capacity. Jester manifests, ehm, art she’s created of Lord Sharpe in lewd and compromising positions and causes it to unfurl on the walls behind his speech.

Lord Sharpe is, of course, none too pleased with this turn of events and sends his guards after Jester. As she flees from them, who should Jester literally run into but Fjord? Cue the heart eyes—it’s Jester and Fjord’s first meeting. We learn in The Mighty Nein episode two that Fjord’s first words to Jester are “My apologies” (as she bumps into him). And Jester’s first words to Fjord are “Oh, handsome hero. Please save me” (as she burrows into his arms). It’s what we might have expected, but we love seeing it come to life.

Fjord’s Magic Sword Has Him Inadvertently Saving Jester’s Life in Their First Meeting
After his ship wrecked, Fjord picked up the sword of his (potentially dead) mentor, Vandran—the Sword of Fathoms. And it seems like this sword has quite a few magical abilities that Fjord didn’t know about. For one, it can manipulate people into doing what he wants. It can also seemingly shape-shift his face. Lastly, it goes where it wants to. As the guards encroach on Jester and Fjord during their first meeting in The Mighty Nein, Fjord tries to explain he has no part in this. But instead, he seemingly summons the sword into his hands and then accidentally blasts the guards with magic he didn’t know existed and has no choice but to fight. Oops. It might have been more romantic if Fjord had wanted to defend Jester, not been bullied into it by a magical object, but that’s Jester and Fjord for you.

Fjord and Jester Set Off to Zadash Together in The Mighty Nein Series
Jester and Fjord finally make it to the safety of the Lavish Chateau, the home of Jester and her mother,
Marion Lavorre, The Ruby of the Sea. There, The Mighty Nein‘s Jester and Fjord finally formally introduce themselves to one another, an important step of their first meeting. Fjord marvels at Jester’s art. And Jester assumes that Fjord was the captain of his ship, and he doesn’t correct her.

Their quiet is cut short, though, because Lord Sharpe is fast on their heels. Wanting to save her daughter’s life and protect her business and employees, Marion insists that Jester escape to somewhere “far away,” to Zadash. She tells Jester her old friend, Madame Luenna, who runs the Pillow Trove Hotel, will take Jester in and protect her. We learn that this will be Jester’s first time really leaving the Chateau for a long time.
Fjord Promises That He Will Watch Over Jester

And thus, when Jester proclaims that Fjord is a heroic ship captain, Marion asks him to escort Jester on her journey and watch over her. Soft to an attractive woman’s pleas (and the bag of money she offers), Fjord promises valiantly that he will indeed do this.
Fjord and Jester’s First Meeting Concludes with Foreshadowing and a Tusk Love Easter Egg

As Fjord and Jester’s first meeting comes to a close on The Mighty Nein episode two, we get one last scene with them together. In it, a few important aspects of the characters come to light. We learn that Jester’s powers come from her god The Traveler, who we have yet to meet. We also learn that Fjord does not know where his powers/the powers of his sword, the Sword of Fathoms, come from and he’d like to find out. Finally, Jester name-drops that in Zadash, we can find an erotic bookstore called Chastity’s Nook. Die-hard Critters will know that’s the bookshop where Jester picks up the epic novel Tusk Love, which has since become a real book we can read in our world.
Showrunner Tasha Huo Tells Nerdist About Bringing This Iconic First Meeting to Life
When speaking to Nerdist, showrunner Tasha Huo shared that bringing Fjord and Jester’s first meeting to life was one of her very favorite parts of adapting the campaign. She shared, “It was really fun to actually see like the Session Zero where they first met in The Mighty Nein series. So it was fun to talk to Travis about ‘what was that Session Zero for you?’ Because we never got to see it and actually show that on-screen.”

Additionally, Huo added about depicting more of Jester and Fjord in The Mighty Nein: “It’s so fun because Jester and Fjord, when they first meet, are such oil and water in so many ways, and she is all brightness and cupcakes, and really sees the world in just the absolute opposite light, is poor Ford, who’s not coming from a good place. And so getting to see those two together at the start is just so great, especially because if you watch Critical Role, you know that Travis was trying so hard not to do that. [Be in a romance storyline]. And so that resistance was very much a part of Fjord’s character, and we’re going to see that play out. It’s excellent, and it’s a timeless love story, and it’s so great to go to the beginning of it.”
The Mighty Nein Series Changes Jester and Fjord’s First Meeting From Previous Versions
Before this official iteration of Jester and Fjord’s first meeting in The Mighty Nein, we received some information about it from Bailey and Willingham as well as through Dark Horse’s The Mighty Nein Origins: Fjord Stone comic. But ultimately, the version depicted in The Mighty Nein is a bit different from what we heard and saw before.
Initially, Bailey and Willingham noted at Emerald City Comic Con 2018 that Jester and Fjord first met when Fjord saw Jester using magic to play tricks on unsuspecting bystanders in Port Damali. Since Fjord had recently acquired magical abilities of his own from (spoilers!) Uk’otoa, a sea monster demigod, he was curious to know more about her powers. Later, Jester was being chased by guards after stealing something or other, and ran into Fjord. The pair agreed to travel north together and spent about four weeks together before they encountered the rest of the Mighty Nein group. (And entered into the beginning of Critical Role Campaign 2.) A part of this version of events can be seen in The Mighty Nein Origins: Fjord Stone comic, which you can take a look at below.

Ultimately, this version of Jester and Fjord’s first Critical Role meeting is not the one depicted in Prime Video’s The Mighty Nein series, though elements from it are retained. We assume that, since Jester and Fjord’s meeting wasn’t fully fleshed out in either the campaign or the comics, the Critical Role team took the time to really think it through this go-around. Of course, it also had to fit in with the series’ narrative, which isn’t one-to-one with the campaign’s. So, ultimately, we don’t yet have an official ruling on which version is “canon.” But in a sprawling world like Critical Role‘s we say, take the parts you like of each tale to create your perfect version of Jester and Fjord’s first meeting.
However you slice that cake, they are perfect.
The Mighty Nein is now streaming on Prime Video. Its first three episodes are now available to watch. New episodes release on Wednesdays.
