The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has a lot to live up to. It’s not only based on one of the franchise’s best entries. It’s based on one of the highest-rated video games ever. The film will also have to live up to its predecessor. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smash hit. It took home more than $1.36 billion at the global box office. Plus, you know, this is Super Mario Bros. we’re talking about here. Anything and everything associated with the series comes with a lot of hype. And that was true before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie released a very fun first trailer that has us ready to hit play on this sequel.
Nintendo—with some help from a very excited Jack Black—debuted the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during its latest Nintendo Direct. It opens with a very funny sequence of an angry, lovesick, tiny Bowser living in his small castle under the watchful eye of Mario and Luigi. That’s followed by enough Easter eggs to make any Super Mario Bros. super fan happy.
But the big reveal from this The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer—which doesn’t show much of Mario’s promised space journey—is two new important additions to the film. Yes, we’re talking about Princess Rosalina, who is voiced by MCU star Brie Larson, and Bowser Jr., played by Benny Safdie. Rosalina is the protector of the cosmos and star-shaped Lumas. We actually met one Luma in The Super Mario Bros., and now we’re sure to see plenty more.
Bowser Jr., of course, is, of course, Bowser’s only child and the prince and heir to his throne. We bet he’ll get up to quite a bit of mischief. He’s already being adorable and chaotic in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will also see Chris Pratt back as Mario. Charlie Day will also return as his frantic brother Luigi. Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Kamek) will also reprise their roles from the original.
The team behind the camera is also the same. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are back with a screenplay from Matthew Fogel. Composer Brian Tyler returned to score the film. And Illumination Studios is handling the animation.
Now we just have to handle waiting to see it. This highly, highly, highly anticipated sequel releases in theaters on April 3, 2026.
