The Ultimate MOTU Easter Egg Hunt: 19 Classic References Hidden in the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Trailer Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

The second Masters of the Universe trailer delivered true Eternian action, which we absolutely adored, and as the cherry on top, it was chock-full of references and Easter eggs. Not only did the Masters of the Universe trailer nod to the original toyline, but it also smartly referenced the iconic cartoon show from the ’80s. So join us as we embark on the ULTIMATE Masters of the Universe Easter egg hunt. Here are 19 references to iconic MOTU lore and iconography we clocked in the second jam-packed trailer for Travis Knight’s Masters of the Universe.

1. Prince Adam’s Pink Shirt Easter Egg Harkens Back to Filmination in Masters of the Universe Trailer

Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) is seen wearing a pink shirt in the Masters of the Universe trailer, as he’s dragged into a jail cell on Eternia. This is a direct homage to the pink tunic he always wore in the Filmation He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon. His original action figure also had a pink fabric top (that every kid lost). We love a hero in pink.

2. The Heroic Warriors Imprisoned

(Left) The Heroic Warriors imprisoned in MOTU trailer (Right) The Heroic Warriors in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

We see Teela (Camila Mendes), Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), Ram Man (Jon Xue Zhang), and Fisto (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson), and Mekaneck in the prison cell that they dragged Adam into. These are the OG Heroic Warriors who stood by He-Man and fought against Skeletor in the classic TV show. It feels good to see them all assembled once again. Full points for glowing triangle eyes.

3. Cringer Appears in Adorable Masters of the Universe Trailer Easter Egg

Cringer, seen here without his Battle Cat armor, is another fun Easter egg for long-time fans. It’s rare to see Cringer without his Battle Cat armor, but as we can see above, the beloved feline ally is not always dressed for fighting. The Masters of the Universe trailer offers our first look at Prince Adam’s “fearless friend,” as the intro to the ’80s cartoon called him. And we love seeing the Masters of the Universe trailer lean into the softer sides of our favorite heroes with these fun Easter eggs, as well as displaying their obviously heroic aspects.

You can snag a cute Cringer of your own today, if you want a special green friend.

4. Castle Grayskull Looks Menacing

Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

We next see the mysterious Castle Grayskull, standing alone among craggy mountains, just as in the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe ’80s Filmation series. In the ancient days of Eternia, this was the Hall of Wisdom, where Eternia’s Elders hid their secret knowledge. If you’re wondering why this good guy location looks so intense, here’s the lowdown. When they foresaw the coming of evil, the Elders transformed the Hall of Wisdom in the foreboding Castle Grayskull. And they placed a Sorceress to always guard its secrets, and watch over the Castle’s guardian, He-Man. We’ll talk more about this Sorceress in our 16th Masters of the Universe trailer Easter egg below.

5. Cringer in the MGM Logo

Cringer pops up again, this time roaring in the center of MGM’s title treatment, replacing the iconic MGM lion. Given the mighty roar, we think this is Cringer in his Battlecat form, sans helmet. The real Cringer couldn’t scare a mouse.

6. King Randor and Queen Marlena Drawings From Masters of the Universe Trailer Are Filmination Easter Eggs

(Left) Adam's drawing of King Randor and Queen Marlena in the MOTU Film (Right) Randor and Marlena in the '80s cartoon.
Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

Adam’s childhood drawings of his parents, King Randor (James Purefoy) and Queen Marlena (Charlotte Riley), show them wearing their colors from the ’80s Filmation cartoon. In the movie, they send their son to Earth to protect him from Skeletor’s forces. This is not the first time Randor and Marlena were separated from their young child. As a baby, Adam’s twin sister Adora was stolen from them and taken to Etheria by Hordak. We love this fun Easter egg to the cartoon embedded in the Masters of the Universe trailer.

7. The Talon Fighter

(Left) He-Man's ship on Eternia in the MOTU film (Right) the Talon Fighter from the MOTU '80s cartoon.
Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

Next, we see a Talon Fighter-inspired ship. This is a Masters of the Universe trailer Easter egg is a fun nod to the falcon-shaped vehicle the Heroic Warriors fly around in, saving Eternia, in the Filmation cartoon. ’80s kids might also recall that the Talon Fighter toy came with a perch called Point Dread, which you could attach to the top of Castle Grayskull. Will we see that recreated on film? We certainly have high hopes. You can also grab the modern version of the toy, if that’s up your alley.

8. Skeletor’s Ship, The Collector, Wears His Face

(Left) Skeletor's ship in Masters of the Universe (Right) Skeletor's Collector from the '80s MOTU cartoon.

Skeletor’s (Jared Leto) ship, The Collector, originally appeared as the Evil Warriors’ main mode of transport in the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Filmation series. It became so iconic that, eventually, the Masters of the Universe Mattel line made a toy of it a few years back. It’s only fitting that the Lord of Destruction’s ship should have his ugly skull face too.

We love how these Masters of the Universe Easter eggs extend from the cartoon to the toy to the movie and carry such a rich legacy.

9. The Roton Ship Is a Deep-Cut Cartoon Easter Egg

(Left) A rotating ship in Masters of the Universe (Right) Roton on the '80s MOTU cartoon.

The Roton ship inspires this spinning vehicle in the Masters of the Universe movie trailer. The Roton ship is one used by Skeletor’s minions in the Masters of the Universe Filmation show to carry out his evil missions. There was also a nifty toy that had rotors that spun around as you dragged it along the ground, with Skeletor’s Evil Warriors on board. Once again, we love how this deep-cut Roton lore makes it into the Masters of the Universe trailer as a little something extra for long-time fans. (You can also grab a modern version of Roton today.)

10. Evil-Lyn’s Hair in the Masters of the Universe Trailer Is an Easter Egg of Its Own

(Left) Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn in Masters of the Universe (Right) Evil-Lyn in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

Evil-Lyn (Alison Brie) is the cruel witch who is Skeletor’s most loyal ally. Although Evil-Lyn rarely took off her helmet in the original He-Man series, she did once. And that’s when viewers learned she has short white hair. It’s a nice touch, and an Easter egg onto itself, that Alison Brie’s version also has bone-white hair in the Masters of the Universe movie trailer.

11. He-Man’s Power Sword

(Left) The Power Sword in Masters of the Universe (Right) He-Man holds the Power Sword in the '80s cartoon.

The Power Sword of Grayskull is a centerpiece of Eternian mythology. The version we see in the Masters of the Universe trailer lifts the design from He-Man’s Power Sword from the ’80s cartoon; an Easter egg we love to see. There have been several variations of the Power Sword across toys, cartoons, and comic books. But it looks like the movie is sticking to the Filmation design the most, and that’s a worthy homage in our book.

We are also obsessed with the interactive new toy version of the Power Sword that has been released, especially for the new Masters of the Universe movie.

12. Trap-Jaw’s Weaponized Arm Comes to Life

Trap Jaw’s (Sam C. Wilson) interchanging arm hook is a classic character design from both the He-Man toys and the cartoon, brought to life for the Masters of the Universe film and revealed to us in this trailer. Back in the day, this evil cyborg minion of Skeletor’s was a favorite action figure among kids, who loved changing out all his various arm weapons. And we bet he still is.

13. He-Man’s “I Have the Power!” Moment in the Masters of the Universe Trailer Has Faint But Important Easter Egg

Prince Adam transforms into He-Man in live-action and on the '80s MOTU cartoon show.
Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

In the Masters of the Universe trailer, Prince Adam transforms into He-Man, with Castle Grayskull appearing behind him. He strikes his iconic “I Have the Power” pose, something every fan will immediately recognize. Just as in the He-Man Filmination cartoon, the film version of Castle Grayskull faintly appears behind Adam when he transforms, no matter where he actually is standing. We love that the Masters of the Universe movie took the time to add in this faint but powerful homage.

14. Roboto’s Inclusion Is a Wink to Fans in Masters of the Universe Trailer

(Left) Roboto in Masters of the Universe (Right) Roboto in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

We see He-Man’s metallic ally Roboto (voiced by Kristin Wiig) in the Masters of the Universe trailer. This Easter egg brings to life a deep cut character who appeared in the ’80s Masters of the Universe cartoon and had a memorable action figure. In the cartoon and the toy, we can see Roboto’s gears move inside his clear chest. Maybe we’ll see how his internal systems work in the movie, too.

15. Snake Mountain Revealed

Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

We next see Snake Mountain in the Masters of the Universe trailer, and that’s Skeletor’s legendary stronghold. It looks just like it did in the Filmation cartoon. Only here, with sinister lava falls instead of waterfalls. In the MOTU lore, Snake Mountain was once home to King Hisss and his evil Snake Men, thousands of years prior. Skeletor made it his home base when he became stranded on Eternia from his planet of Etheria, home of Hordak.

16. The Sorceress Becomes Zoar

MOTU fans know that The Sorceress (Morena Baccarin) can only leave Castle Grayskull by transforming into the falcon Zoar, a fun Easter egg recreated in a moment from the Masters of the Universe movie we see in the trailer. Fun fact; the was a toy of Zoar years before the Sorceress in her human form received an action figure. The guardian of Grayskull actually didn’t get her own action figure until the original toyline’s final waves.

17. He-Man’s Sky Sled Appears in the Masters of the Universe Trailer as an Easter Egg Straight From the ’80s Toy Line

Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Filmation

He-Man uses his trusty Sky Sled in the Masters of the Universe trailer, an Easter egg vehicle straight from the ’80s series and toy line. The original Sky Sled toy was a detachable part of the MOTU Battle Ram vehicle. We’re still not sure why it has no seat backing attached, but we guess the Eternian Royal Guard are just that skilled at flying.

You can even snag a modern version of the Sky Sled toy in celebration of the new movie.

18. Man-At-Arms’ Mace

Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel

The Masters of the Universe movie trailer also gives us a close-up shot of Man-at-Arms’ mace. This weapon is modeled after the original action figure accessory from 1982. Man-at-Arms, whose real name is Duncan, had versions of this mace in nearly every incarnation of MOTU. We can’t wait to see Idris Elba knock some Evil Warriors’ heads in with it.

If you want the mace in your hands, you can get yourself a Man-at-Arms figure from the current Masters of the Universe line.

19. He-Man’s Power Sword vs. Skeletor’s Havoc Staff

Amazon MGM Studios/Mattel/Netflix

And finally, we see an iconic face-off at the end of the Masters of the Universe trailer, an Easter egg fight we HAD to see: He-Man’s Power Sword vs. Skeletor’s Havoc Staff. Every MOTU fan knows this is the ultimate He-Man vs. Skeletor visual payoff. Although originally, Skeletor had his own purple Power Sword, his Havoc Staff soon became his signature weapon. When Skeletor and He-Man fought in the 1987 live-action movie, it was the Havoc staff vs. He-Man’s mighty sword. It’s only fitting they fight with these weapons in their modern movie as well. (And once, again, we NEED our own version in toy form… Although we wouldn’t say no to a life-size Havoc Staff either.)

We’re quite certain that the Master of the Universe movie will have even more references and Easter eggs from forty years of He-Man in media. And we’re excited to hunt them all down. Masters of the Universe hits theaters everywhere on June 5.
