Apparently, the US Mint is focusing on making dollars and leaving cents behind. AP News reports that the Treasury Department says the US Mint made its final order of penny blanks and will stop producing that coin. The cost of making pennies has gone up by 20% since last year and the Treasury expects that savings will be around $56 million. It would be nice if that money went to making life more equitable for all but, well, we know how that goes.Â
The idea of the US Mint no longer making pennies is sad when you think about it. The penny was one of the first coins made back in 1792 and became one of the most popular to produce.

However, as people and more businesses are leaning more towards cashless payment methods, it is not shocking. For now, it seems our quarters, nickels, and dimes are safe from cancellation.
You may want to hold onto any old pennies you have for the distant future. They could be worth something, especially as the years roll by and pennies are in circulation less and less. Maybe you’ll strike it big and get rich! In the meantime, prepare to say farewell to new pennies.
