As much as I love air fryers and blenders that can also make steaming hot soup, some of my most loved kitchen appliances are not pricey catch-all machines. My dad gifted me the Chefman Electric Grill and Panini Press for my birthday last year, and I’m annoyed with myself that I didn’t plug it in sooner. I thought it was a basic panini press, but it turns out it has much more to offer than a hot toastie. Now, I’m a regular electric grill master. 

I was under the impression that this appliance was essentially a giant waffle iron without the waffling capabilities. I’ve seen cheap panini presses before and they’re just two ridged hot plates that hinge together and smash things. While there is often a time and place for smashing sandwiches at high temperatures, the Pac-Man hinged plates can cause food items to cook unevenly by squishing them awkwardly at an angle. The Chefman actually isn’t built this way.

Two things make this electric grill and panini press better than most. For one, it has a swinging top griddle plate. When you press the lid down onto a tall sandwich or a hearty meat and vegetable skewer, the top plate tilts to remain parallel to the bottom plate. I am rewarded with evenly cooked meats and evenly seared grill marks every time.

For its second trick, the Chefman Electric Grill and Panini Press can open up 180°, meaning a release button allows the top griddle plate to lay out completely flat. If you’re hosting a rooftop grill or your son is having friends over for dinner, you can double your burger grilling real estate with the click of a button.

I concur with their collective assessment.
