This Controller Turns Your Phone Into a Gaming Console, and It’s 33% Off for Prime Day Michelle Ehrhardt | usagoldmines.com

Prime Day 2025 is here from Tuesday, July 8 to Friday, July 11, and Lifehacker is sharing the best sales based on product reviews, comparisons, and price-tracking tools.

As much as I love dedicated portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2 or the Lenovo Legion Go S, here’s a secret: You can probably get by with just your phone. Far from the days of Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds, mobile games are now much more expansive than they used to be, with deep combat systems and large worlds to explore. Plus, there’s game streaming, for playing console games on the go. The catch? For these larger experiences, touch controls get tiring quickly.

That’s where telescoping game controllers come in. These attach to the sides of your phone and usually plug directly into its USB-C port (or, for older iPhones, Lightning port). In the past, I’ve recommended controllers from a company called Backbone for this, but this year, I’m going to shake things up.

For Prime Day, you can get Razer’s new Razer Kishi Ultra on sale for $50. There are a few reasons why that’s worth paying attention to. The most noticeable is apparent just from looking at it.

The Razer Kishi Ultra is big. While a lot of mobile controllers come with smaller sticks and buttons, and almost no grips, the Kishi Ultra is essentially like an Xbox controller split in two, turning your phone into something similar to the PlayStation Portal. That doesn’t just make this more comfortable, but also a bit more robust—you’ll be able to hold onto not just your phone with this, but also an iPad Mini.

But beyond that, there are a few other perks. The triggers are Hall Effect, which means you can adjust their actuation, and the face buttons are mechanical, for responsive tactile feedback. There are also extra bumper buttons, which you can set to do whatever you want, and an 8-way D-Pad. Essentially, upgrading to this means you won’t be left with any shortage of inputs.

Plus, there’s the usual Razer flare, with optional Chroma RGB lighting around the edges of the controller. This controller also works with Razer’s custom PC Remote Play service, which I got to try a bit at CES this year. Unlike other remote play options, this service automatically fits your games to your phone’s aspect ratio, which can be a big plus—phones are often wider than the 16:9 aspect ratio many other remote play services are limited to.

The gauntlet is clearly thrown, and I’m curious to see how other mobile controller companies respond. The only catch? The Razer Kishi Ultra is limited to a USB-C connection, so it won’t work with iPhones that are older than the iPhone 15. On the plus side, it can also use that USB-C connection to serve as a wired controller for PCs, expanding its usability. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck with this purchase.

Looking for something else? Retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and Home Depot have Prime Day competition sales that are especially useful if you don’t have Amazon Prime.

  • Walmart’s Prime Day competition sale begins at midnight on July 8 and will include deals up to 50% off. It’s an especially good option if you have Walmart+.

  • Best Buy’s Prime Day competition sale, “Black Friday in July,” runs through Sunday, July 13 and has some of the best tech sales online. It’s an especially good option if you’re a My Best Buy “Plus” or “Total” member.

  • Home Depot extended its 4th of July sale through at least July 9, competing with some amazing deals of its own. It’s an especially good option if you’re looking for power tools, appliances, or outdoor equipment.
