The season three finale brought some monumental moments to The Wheel of Time. Rand has officially declared himself the Car’a’carn, Nynaeve and Elayne’s crew take down the Black Ajah, and Elaida Sedai has now taken over the White Tower. But one of the biggest moments is the death of Siuan in The Wheel of Time‘s season three finale.
Tar Valon has had a tumultuous seasonal arc, with Siuan having to fight against both the Black Ajah and Elaida to maintain her position. This, however, turns out to be a losing battle, as unfortunately we have to say goodbye to Siuan in a shocking death that’s a big loss for the show.

Throughout this season, Elaida has been increasingly suspicious of Siuan. She believes Siuan is hatching some kind of plan with Moiraine regarding what they would do about the Dragon. Elaida has quite the chip on her shoulder. In the finale, we learn that it is because Siuan became the Amyrlin Seat thanks to Moiraine’s help. While Elaida originally thought that her seniority made her an obvious choice for the position, Moiraine worked harder to use her own influence, in true Blue Ajah fashion, to make sure her partner was on the seat instead.
The plan to find the Dragon Reborn and make the White Tower ready to aid him began twenty years before the events of season three. This was after both Moiraine and Siuan learned of the prophesied arrival of the Dragon. Moiraine went to go and find him, to help control his power, while Siuan worked on preparing the White Tower to ally with the Dragon so that they could defeat the Dark One together.
While Moiraine was able to stick to her part of the plan, Siuan found it much more difficult to do her part. This became even more difficult with the discovery of the Black Ajah in the White Tower. In the season two finale, we see Moiraine leave alongside Lanfear, Rand, and Lan, making for a major split between Siuan and Moiraine as they prepare for the Dragon’s return.

As season three progresses, the news of the Dragon’s return has shaken the Tower, and so has the reveal of the presence of the Black Ajah. In an effort to find the last remaining member of the Black Ajah, Siuan, Verin, Leane, and Adeleas conspire to set a trap for Elaida. This plan backfires, as Elaida is nearly killed by a Gray Man, and her suspicion that Siuan is up to something only becomes stronger.
Elaida is one of the most ruthless characters in the show, a true believer in the philosophy of the ends justifying the means. She believes the best way to defeat the Dark One is to keep the Dragon in the control of the Aes Sedai. To Elaida, as Siuan says in the finale, the only thing that matters is power, and she believes power is best used in her hands.
In an interview with Nerdist, Shohreh Aghdashloo spoke about how difficult it was to portray Elaida’s hatred towards Siuan. “We had nothing in common, and that was very challenging for me – how ruthlessly powerful this politician is, who believes that ends will justify the means, unlike what I think in real life,” she said.
The position of the Amyrlin Seat is one of great power, as whoever is in the seat has considerable influence on what happens throughout the world. Many rulers have Aes Sedai as their advisors, and they implement the White Tower’s strategy in their respective territories. After Elaida lost the vote for the Amyrlin Seat, she sought to become the advisor to Queen Morgase Trakand, ruler of the most powerful nation of the world, Andor.
Queen Morgase even pays a visit to the White Tower, leaving Elaida behind to find out what Siuan is up to. Elaida, harboring a major grudge since she lost the vote to become the Amyrlin Seat, is hell-bent on confirming her suspicions that Siuan is secretly helping the Dragon Reborn.
These tensions come to a height as Elaida calls another vote, this time, to depose Siuan Sanche and sentence to still her, strip her of access to the One Power, and have a trial before the hall for her crime of conspiring with the exiled Moiraine to aid the Dragon. Elaida has worked all season to curry favor with the rest of the Aes Sedai in the Hall, and it pays off. Siuan is found guilty and she meets her gruesome death in The Wheel of Time, which is a major departure from the books.
After the events of Book 4, The Shadow Rising, Siuan Sanche and Leane Sharif flee from the White Tower to begin the rebellion against Elaida’s White Tower. This rebellion is eventually led by Egwene, who wages a major battle for the Tower alongside Siuan, Leane, and Gareth Byrne, former head of Morgase’s guard. Since Siuan is no longer alive, we will have to wait and see how the rebellion against Elaida forms.

Although this is the last we will see of Sophie Okonedo’s Siuan Sanche because of her death, this will likely not be the last time we see Elaida. She continues to play a major role in the books and will likely do so in the series, if we get a season four.
Aghdashloo hopes to have scenes with Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine in a potential next season. “I loved working with Sophie. What an amazing actress… Sophie was shining like hell when we confronted one another, but I loved working with her. I didn’t have a scene with Moiraine (Rosamund Pike). But I’m looking forward to that, perhaps in the next season.”
What happens to the White Tower now is a major question after this season, especially when it comes to how the Aes Sedai who are not loyal to Elaida will respond. The rebellion against Elaida will likely happen, but we have yet to find out who will lead it. This opens up some very interesting possible arcs for many of our Aes Sedai main characters, especially Egwene.
