We all know how difficult it can be to learn a new language. That’s especially true when you’re trying to self-study your way to fluency. There are tons of language learning apps nowadays, but Google’s Little Language Lessons aims to use its powerful AI to help you become more comfortable in common scenarios.
The site is still in its experimental phase, but it aims to take a very different approach than your standard language textbooks or classes. Instead of rigid lessons, it uses AI to generate tiny, personalized language exercises based on real-life situations (like ordering coffee, asking for directions, or making small talk). All of this is stuff you’ll actually use. It feels less like studying and more like casually practicing with a very patient tutor.
It’s super adaptable, too. You can describe a scenario such as “I’m traveling in Spain and need to check into a hotel,” and it builds a mini lesson around that. It’ll give you useful phrases, break them down, and even let you explore variations so you’re not just memorizing one expression. Rather than a set phrase that may leave you stuck, you’ll actually be armed with a full understanding of the situation instead.

Little Language Lessons offers a ton of useful and practical real-world phrases and vocab for just about any scenario you could find yourself in.

I use the service for Japanese and it’s been brilliant so far. I noticed that when I ordered a coffee at a café in Tokyo, the barista asked me questions outside of the passage I had memorized from a textbook, but I was able to recover and handle it.
There’s also a strong focus on context and tone, which is something most language apps completely gloss over. And each lesson is short, so they’re much more easily digestible. You can jump in for a minute or two, learn something practical, and move on.
It’s still an early experiment, so don’t expect a full Duolingo replacement yet. That said, I find that Little Language Lessons works best as a low-pressure supplement to other language apps or textbooks. Since it’s completely free, there’s no reason not to give it a shot. It currently supports 23 languages and dialects.
