If you grew up in a certain era, then you are likely very familiar with the holiday muzak of retail department stores. This is especially true for Gen Xers and Millennials, who grew up tagging along with their folks to big box stores during the holidays. For us, this was the background noise of our childhoods. Many of these playlists, to use modern terminology, were created for specific retail giants like Woolworth’s and Kmart. Most remain lost to time. But one YouTuber named Jimmy Reno has acquired the 1974 in-store Kmart holiday music and uploaded it. Let it take you on a two-hour loop trip back to simpler times as snow gently falls on the parking lot.
The in-store track also has some delightfully cheesy Kmart commercial jingles. They’re sandwiched between soothing instrumental versions of iconic Christmas carols like “White Christmas” and “Jingle Bells.” Also heard in between songs are employees on the speakers asking for store security (All those holiday shoplifters!) Most anachronistic of all, there’s an “Attention, no smoking on the sales floor, except in the snack bar area” message. Yes, once upon a time, you could light up indoors and force everyone to breathe in your filthy fumes. Not everything was better back in the day, folks. Another video, from 1991, will take you to a different Kmart holiday era. But one no less cheesy.
These days, we do most of our holiday shopping online. As a culture, we’re no longer fighting over the last Cabbage Patch Kids doll with our neighbor. Because of that, so many department stories have vanished, gone with the last century. And K-Mart, once ubiquitous in every town in America, has all but disappeared. Only one K-Mart store remains in the continental U.S., in Florida. We doubt it has any store-specific muzak playing for shoppers. But it sure would be amazing if one daring employee just decided to play this 1974 playlist over the speakers, and take everyone shopping back in time. We’d call that a holiday miracle.
