Stranger Things wouldn’t be complete without its musical moments. A few years back, the catchy lyrics and beat of “Running Up That Hill” were unavoidable, all thanks to an iconic slo-mo sequence of Max in the Upside Down. Just as Kate Bush faced a revival after season four of Stranger Things, season five brought a similar wave of attention to another 1980s pop star. Tiffany had no idea that her hit song “I Think We’re Alone Now” would be in Stranger Things until season five premiered. It was a welcome surprise for the artist.

The iconic 1980s cover is featured in season five, episode three. It’s the scene where Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) dances through the Creel House while trapped in Vecna’s prison world. Apparently, Tiffany didn’t realize her song was in the show until she saw the scene herself. She was happily surprised.
“It’s wild and beautiful. When I recorded ‘I Think We’re Alone Now,’ I had no idea it would have this kind of life,” she said in a recent interview with Attitude. “To see it pop up in something like Stranger Things and connect with a new generation—that’s magic. It reminds me that music doesn’t expire. Songs find the people who need them.”
This isn’t the first time “I Think We’re Alone Now” has popped up in a tv show. My brain immediately jumps to the first episode of The Umbrella Academy, when the Hargreeves siblings have an independent dance break in their rooms. Something about the 1987 banger just makes you want to bust a move.

“I had no idea they were using it in the show until it happened,” Tiffany continued. “I’m a huge fan of the show and I had all my girlfriends messaging me when it aired. My son thought it was pretty cool too—we share a love for sci-fi!”
In the Vecna-centered seasons of Stranger Things, the Hawkins gang discover that music serves as an anchor to reality. One powerful enough to snap anyone out of Vecna’s mind spell. For Max, that anchor is “Running Up That Hill.” For Holly, it’s “I Think We’re Alone Now.”

Thanks to Stranger Things, the catchy song has been given new life nearly forty years later. Recently, it has also appeared in the film Pillion and season three of Yellowjackets.
