One of Disney’s most famous animated characters is getting the live-action treatment. Only this time, as a Disney+ series, not as a feature film. Thanks to a report in Deadline, we’ve learned that Tinker Bell, the sassy blonde pixie who first appeared in 1953’s Peter Pan, will star in a new live-action drama series. The title for this series is Tink, and it comes from creators Liz Heldens and Bridget Carpenter. The duo worked together on Friday Night Lights. If the title Tink sounds familiar for a series, that’s because Disney put a movie of the same name into development a decade ago, potentially starring Reese Witherspoon.
We don’t know anything about what the show will be about, besides some kind of dramatic reinterpretation of Tinker Bell. In the original J.M. Barrie play, she was portrayed as just a little point of light. The 1953 film reinvented her as a blonde bombshell type. However, despite urban legends, she was not based on Marilyn Monroe. The iconic star wouldn’t become a household name until well after Peter Pan went into production. Tinker Bell quickly became a breakout star, and became part of the opening credits for Walt Disney’s TV series, Disneyland. To this day, Tinker Bell sells a ton of merchandise for Disney. And chances are, you probably know someone with a Tinker Bell tattoo.
Given that the report says Tink will be a dramatic series, we can’t help but wonder what they plan to keep, and what they plan to change about her. Will Tinker Bell remain a tiny winged being from Neverland, or a regular human-sized person? Will she have that iconic little green outfit, or wear regular street clothes? And most importantly, will she remain mute, or will she have the ability to talk? That aspect seems crucial. We imagine we’ll hear more about Tink at upcoming D23 events in the near future.
