Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics announced that it is laying off some of its staff as part of its restructuring process after struggling to stay afloat for a while. The studio stated that the layoffs wouldn’t affect its ongoing projects, including a new Tomb Raider game.
Staff layoffs have become a major area of concern as the trend continues to affect many game studios around the world. Despite being one of the most covered topics in gaming, layoffs have continued to hit many game makers who have been left out of work.
Crystal Dynamics, an American game developer, became the latest studio to be affected by the disturbing trend.

Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain, and Gex titles, announced that it was laying off 17 of its staff members on March 26, 2025. The American game studio stated that it did not take the decision lightly, as the layoffs were conducted as part of its restructuring efforts. The game studio added that the decision to lay off the staff was made to help the game studio better align its current business needs with its future success.
The American game studio continued to defend the staff laid off and even praised them by calling them talented. Crystal Dynamics stated that the layoffs did not reflect the staff member’s ability or their dedication to their work at the studio. The Tomb Raider developer added that it acknowledged that the outcome was painful for the affected staff members and that it was going to support them through the tough times by providing transition packages and reaching out for other job opportunities.
Crystal Dynamics also went ahead and assured gamers that the changes in staff would not alter the studio’s ongoing projects. The American game studio continues to work on two major projects: a new Tomb Raider installment and a reboot of Perfect Dark that is being co-developed with The Initiative. However, the studio has not provided more information on the projects since early 2024, when the Tomb Raider game’s character artwork was revealed. The game studio also recently collaborated with Aspyr on remasters of classic Tomb Raider titles and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.
The announced layoffs came after the studio had been faced with financial pressures in the recent past. Crystal Dynamic’s situation mirrors the same issues as many other studios that have conducted mass job cuts in the gaming industry. The American studio notably conducted “cost reduction” measures in 2023 after it was acquired by the Embracer Group. The unsuccessful release of Marvel’s Avengers in 2020 also resulted in poor performance that forced the studio to shut the game down after three years.
Gamers react to Crystal Dynamics layoffs
Gamers went online to express their opinions after the Tomb Raider developer announced the latest staff layoffs. Many gamers said that they were sad to hear about the layoffs and hoped the staff members could get work elsewhere, given that they are talented and equipped with the skills to improve other game studios.
Some gamers added that the sad situation should warrant other game developers to come together and help those affected by the layoffs to get work elsewhere.
