On Wednesday, April 30, Ubisoft announced that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has surpassed 2 million players worldwide. According to the post, Ubisoft believes the game is ushering in a new era for the series, as several projects have been revealed since the release of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown in January 2024.
The development team was dissolved after the game was disbanded in October, citing that it did not live up to its sales expectations and would not receive a sequel. Abdelhak Elguess, Senior Producer of the game, tried to put a positive spin on his message that it’s hard to imagine the game with over 2 million players under the radar.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown achieves a great milestone
According to Ubisoft, the Lost Crown, which features a new leading character named Sargon, is a soft comeback for the classic franchise. The gaming company revealed the return of Pop to its 2D platformer roots after a long phase of 3D action adventure entries in the early 2000s, such as The Two Thrones and The Forgotten Sands.
Well over 2M players by now.

Ubisoft added that even though the game was developed under the oversight of a AAA publisher, their latest release is different from previous ones with its stylized 2.5D graphics and emphasis on a single-player offline experience. According to the developer, the recent growth in their fan base is greatly attributed to the game being ported to iOS and Android platforms.
The official X account for Prince of Persia recently announced that the game reached over 2 million players. According to the gaming franchise, the figure follows an earlier released report, which revealed that The Lost Crown sold 1.3 million units in its first year on the market.
In its statement, Ubisoft Montpellier utilized the opportunity to inspire future projects involving the lead actor, Sargon, or other Princes. According to the post, more updates are expected ahead of a supposed full release out of early access. The developer revealed a possible update release and a more delayed Sands of Time remake targeting a 2026 release.
Ubisoft celebrates the achievement of a large player base
Abdelhak Elguess, Senior Producer of Lost Crown, revealed in a statement back in October that bringing back Prince of Persia needed a new identity very far from Assassin’s Creed. He believed that until he looped in the Game Director, Mounir Radi, the first puzzle piece of the game clicked into place.
According to Ubisoft, approaching Prince of Persia as a 2.5D Metroidvania allowed the developers at Ubisoft Montpellier to implement ideas for exploration, puzzles, and combat. Ubisoft revealed that those ideas would work in an open-world game while taking advantage of their considerable expertise in side-scrolling platform games.
Radi said that the Metroidvania approach was not a mandate but an idea that they directly gave. According to the Director, the development team wanted to be sure they could make a true Prince of Persia and still surprise their players; otherwise, it would have been too easy to come up with an expected idea.
Elguess added that it was important for them to push the fantasy aspect and superhero dimension limits far from realistic games and bring Prince of Persia back with its own identity. The post showed the resulting 2.5D Metroidvania-inspired adventure focused on Sargon, the youngest of Immortals, and his quest to rescue the Kidnapped Prince Ghassan of Persia.
Radi believed the formula that worked for the Lost Crown is what he called “ game’s musicality,” a way of viewing platforming and combat challenges like carefully paced musical partitions for players to learn.
