As part of its new trade measures after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Britain has said it is banning the export of video game controllers to Russia which can be used to pilot drones.
Sanctions minister Stephen Doughty saidin a statement:
“We’re … banning outright video game controllers going to Russia, preventing them from being used to pilot drones on the frontline, meaning gaming consoles will no longer be repurposed to kill in Ukraine.”
Stephen Doughty also said that they are using all their power to stop Russia’s war machine, save Ukrainian lives, and keep Russia from taking advantage of British business.
The announcement comes after Russia attacked Ukraine with 215 drones and missiles on the night of April 23rd and 24th. Most of the damage was done in Kyiv. Luckily, Russian planes were shot down 112 times by Ukrainian air defense units, and F-16 and Mirage fighter jets helped fight off the Russian attack.
150 new sanctions against Russia
The video game controller export ban is part of 150 new trade sanctions against Russia. The UK has also blocked access to other technologies, including software that enables the search and development of new oil and gas wells.
The UK also banned the export of chemicals, machinery, and metals to limit Russia’s military and industrial potential.
“Eliminating Russia’s revenues from energy supplies will devastate Putin’s war chest — that’s why we’re stopping the sale of sophisticated software used to profit from new oil and gas reserves, preventing British expertise from fueling Russia’s war machine,” said Doughty.
The new measures take effect immediately. They reflect the British government’s increased focus on trade sanctions rather than financial sanctions.
The UK is not the only nation that has decided to put sanctions on Russia. The EU introduced a new package of sanctions against Russia in February.
The sanctions include a ban on exporting various gaming controllers, gamepads, joysticks, and other input devices for video game consoles or entertainment systems, whether wired or wireless. The ban is explained by the same reason this equipment can be used to control drones.
Yasha Haddaji, head of the Russian Association of Video Game Distributors and Importers, said that the EU’s ban on sending systems to Russia would not affect the country’s ability to get its needed gear.
He said that console makers are not based in Europe and that materials bypass the region. Now, the UK has joined in. However, Russia still has the USand China with whom they seem to be getting along.
UK continued aid to Ukraine, China steps up support for Putin
Britain has helped Ukraine fight Russia’s full-scale attack since the beginning of it. They have done this by both sending aid and putting sanctions on Russia.
London keeps adding new rules that hurt the Russian economy. In this case, on February 24, the UK put the toughest set of sanctions on Russia since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
In addition, the British government imposed new sanctions against Russia on February 14. Three individuals and two legal entities were included in the sanctions list.
Also, the UK recently gave $990 million to Ukraine as part of a G7 loan, using money from frozen Russian assets.
On the other hand, China has beenaccused of supplying Russia with military goods, including gunpowder and artillery. President Zelensky claimed that Chinese personnel are involved in weapons production on Russian territory.
Therefore, Zelenskyy enacted sanctions against three Chinese companies allegedly supplying military-related materials to Russia. The companies are Beijing Aviation and Aerospace Xianghui Technology Co. Ltd., Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber Xining Co. Ltd., and Rui Jin Machinery Co. Ltd.
