Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has released a new essay stressing the need for Open and Verifiable Technology. He believes digital systems must be transparent and easy to audit if they are to earn public trust.
According to Buterin, the internet is no longer just about communication. It now runs finance, healthcare, and even parts of government. Closed systems, he warns, give too much control to a few players and create risks of failure or abuse. Open and verifiable technology, by contrast, spreads power and makes outcomes easier to trust.

Lessons from the Pandemic
Buterin used the COVID-19 pandemic to highlight the dangers of closed models. Most vaccines were developed in a handful of countries using proprietary methods. That led to inequality in access and mistrust over safety. He pointed to projects like PopVax, which use open development, as examples of how transparency can reduce costs and improve access.
He also raised concerns about health devices such as wearables. These tools collect large amounts of personal data. If the platforms behind them remain closed, users risk losing control over sensitive information. Open and verifiable systems, he said, would allow people to keep ownership of their data while staying secure.
Beyond Health
Buterin extended his argument to finance and governance. Traditional systems are costly and slow, while blockchain offers speed and transparency. But without verifiability, digital finance still faces dangers such as hidden backdoors.
Voting technology is another example. Many electronic voting systems depend on software that cannot be checked independently. Buterin argues that only open and verifiable tools can build civic systems that people truly trust.
The same applies to security. Surveillance devices, if built with auditable code, could prevent abuse while still providing protection.
Vitalik just published a vision that stretches far beyond Ethereum.
It is about why every layer of technology, from chips to wallets to health data, must be open and verifiable.

The Road Ahead
Buterin’s essay makes a simple choice clear: societies can either rely on closed systems that centralize power or embrace open and verifiable models that spread it. He sees the latter as the foundation for a digital future where health, finance, governance, and security remain transparent and fair.
