The Addams Family’s pop culture history spans many decades and several generations. There’s something about the creepy and kooky family that we cannot get enough of. That’s evident considering that Netflix’s Wednesday series is incredibly popular, scoring a season three renewal as well as at least one spinoff. Just when it seems we cannot learn anything new about this family, there’s another revelation. We’ve never gotten a full backstory nor history of Thing’s life in Addams Family’s series and films until Wednesday season two. Now, we know the disturbing details behind Thing’s origin story and how it connects directly to Morticia and Gomez’s Nevermore Academy past. 

In season two’s finale, Morticia finally reveals her connection to Tyler’s mom Francoise and her evil genius (and no longer dead) brother Isaac Night (formerly known as Slurp). When they were students Isaac was Gomez’s roommate and best friend. Isaac was doing a series of experiments to see if he could help Francoise be rid of her Hyde condition so she could live a more normal life. He convinces Gomez to help with the experiment by using some of his lightning powers.

However, it is revealed that Isaac intends to kill Gomez to help his sister. Morticia interrupts the experiment and the machine explodes, robbing Gomez of his powers. During the altercation, Morticia slices Isaac’s hand off and they bury him in a grave meant for Gomez. Francoise becomes Stonehurst’s guinea pig and Isaac’s hand becomes Thing, the Addams Family’s loyal appendage.

Later on, Thing tries to help Wednesday save Pugsley from Isaac, who wants to kill him to cure Tyler of his Hyde condition. But Isaac is able to capture him and sew Thing back to his body. This gives Isaac the ability to make things levitate. He nearly kills Wednesday, but Thing is his own sentient being who fights back and saves the day.

Thing goes with Wednesday and Uncle Fester on an adventure, choosing to help them try to locate Enid. He knows the full details about his past, but he’s happy being Wednesday’s sidekick. It’s a pretty cool backstory that makes Thing even weirder, which is a perfect fit for this unhappy family.
