Who Is Part of the Soldiers’ Table in CRITICAL ROLE CAMPAIGN 4? Rotem Rusak | usagoldmines.com

When the cast of Critical Role Campaign 4 was first announced, it came with a surprise. There would be 13 player characters. That seemed like way too much for one campaign to hold and still retain sense. But we quickly learned that while Critical Role Campaign 4 would have a baker’s dozen of characters running around, not all would play at the same time. Instead, Critical Role‘s new Campaign 4 DM, Brennan Lee Mulligan, would run a West Marches style of play. In Mulligan’s words, “The West Marches campaign style is effectively a shared world with more adventurers that are player characters than can fit at the table in one session. And also, on a storytelling level, it really maps the form of fantasy storytelling that people are intimately familiar with and know and love.” Essentially, sub-games form in the main Dungeons & Dragons campaign, but they all intertwine and impact one another. To demarcate these sub-campaigns more clearly, Critical Role Campaign 4 announced that there would be three tables participating in this campaign: the Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers. And now, we finally know just who is playing at the Critical Role Campaign 4 Soldiers table. And it’s not exactly who we expected.

Who, though, has joined the Soldiers’ Table? What does playing at this table even mean? And where can we expect the plot of these Soldiers’ story to go? Here’s Critical Role Campaign 4‘s Soldier table, explained.

In episode three of the campaign, we finally learned which players would join the Soldiers’ Table. In Critical Role Campaign 4, the Soldiers’ Table consists of Teor Pridesire played by Travis Willingham, Thimble played by Laura Bailey, Kattigan Vale played by Robbie Daymond, Tyranny played by Whitney Moore, and Wicander (Wick) Halovar played by Sam Riegel.

While we assumed that Teor Pridesire and Kattigan Vale might be Soldiers in Critical Role Campaign 4, we admit that Tyranny and Wick joining the table surprised us. Perhaps they have more grit and loyalty in their heart than we expected.

What Does It Mean to Be Part of the Soldiers’ Table?

Of course, being a part of the Soldiers’ Table in Critical Role Campaign 4 doesn’t necessarily speak to character traits. When Brennan Lee Mulligan first introduced the concept, he shared that the Soldiers’ Table is “for the people who are interested in a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode—where the non-violent answers were few and far between.” That is, Critical Role Campaign 4 selected players/actors for the Soldiers’ Table based on the particular playstyle they were interested in engaging with during the campaign—in this case, one that has a lot of fighting.

Of course, since Critical Role is also deeply invested in its story, we suspect the idea of a soldier WILL weave into these characters and their stories on a thematic level as well.

What Has Brought the Members of the Soldiers’ Table Together?

But how did the Soldiers’ Table end up in a company together in Critical Role Campaign 4? For Wick and Tyranny, it was a matter of finally realizing that the Halovar family was up to no good. Wick learned that the Candescent Creed religion his family was peddling was just a means of control for them and that they were essentially draining a Celestial (a demi-god of sorts) of his blood for their own gain. Upon accepting this, Wick and Tyranny went to save the life of Teor Pridesire, whom House Halovar had tried to have killed.

Meanwhile, Kattigan and Thimble got into a few scraps together trying to understand where Thimble’s plan to save Thjazi Fang from execution, the central point of the story, went wrong. They learned that an old friend and soldier-in-arms of Thjazi Fang, Casimir, had betrayed their trust, stolen all of Thjazi’s riches, including the Stone of Nightsong, and run away north to Gormalay in Timmony. Teor’s brother, Cyd Pridesire, also involved in the initial rescue plan for Thjazi, seems to have realized Casimir betrayed them and headed after him in that direction.

Given that Kattigan and Thimble are known criminals, Wick and Tyranny have betrayed House Halovar and its partner demons, and House Halovar has attempted to kill Teor Pridesire once already, the Soldiers all feel that they can longer remain in Dol-Makjar at the end of Critical Role Campaign 4, episode three. Additionally, they all have cause to travel north. Tyranny seeks revenge on Casimir, Kattigan knows the area, Wick and Tyranny may have access to resources and lodging that no one else does, and Teor has sworn a life debt to Wick, so he will follow him where he goes. And so, the Soldiers table has united.
