Although Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10 on October 14th, you can still keep using Windows 10 on your PC with extended support. At least, that’s how it goes on paper. The problem is that Windows 10 apparently doesn’t seem to know that extended support is active and is shocking some users with a false warning.
According to both Windows Latest and Windows Central, some Windows 10 PCs are showing a message that says the PC in question is out of support and won’t receive security updates anymore. “Your version of Windows has reached the end of support” says the confusing alert that’s appearing on Windows 10 PCs.
The false warning message, explained
Microsoft has confirmed the error on this support page: “The message, ‘Your version of Windows has reached the end of support’, might incorrectly display in the Windows Update Settings page.” It can appear on any Windows 10 PC running Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions that are enrolled in the Extended Security Updates program. It can also appear on Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 editions.
What’s more, the option for Extended Security Updates (ESU)—which should be displayed once official support expired in October 2025— does not appear on ESU-eligible Windows 10 PCs.
Important: Despite this warning message, affected Windows 10 PCs will continue to receive security updates. As Microsoft explains, this error only involves the incorrect display of this “end of support” message and doesn’t actually impair the PC’s ability to receive security updates. If you’re enrolled in the ESU program, there’s nothing to worry about. You should be able to check this come Patch Tuesday in November.
Microsoft’s response to the issue
As mentioned, Microsoft is aware of the problem and is currently rolling out a patch to the update servers that’ll eliminate the false warning.
In order for this repair update to become active on your Windows 10 PC, have Windows 10 manually check for updates in the settings menu and then restart your Windows 10 PC. It can take up to 48 hours for the incorrect error to disappear at the end of support.
Microsoft will also rectify the error come Patch Tuesday in November, so if you don’t mind the message, you can simply ignore it until the next big update hits. System administrators can also have the false notification removed via Known Issue Rollback (KIR).
