At this year’s Microsoft Ignite 2025 developer conference, two new recovery tools were unveiled for Windows 11.
The first tool is called Point-in-Time Restore (PITR) and allows you to create a restore point that you can return to when needed. Wait, isn’t that basically the same as System Restore, which has been part of Windows for many years? Kind of, except the big difference here is that even local files and apps can be saved and restored using PITR.
The second tool is called Cloud Rebuild, which makes it possible to reinstall Windows 11 from scratch via the cloud. In this context, Microsoft is also testing a new version of Quick Machine Recovery, the feature that allows IT administrators to reboot problematic PCs remotely.
The new recovery tools will become part of Microsoft Intune and will be rolled out sometime in the first half of 2026.
