It’s been a complicated ride for Yellowjackets, a show that was once at the very top of the list of best TV shows for all of Nerdist‘s editors. After an incredibly promising season one full of mystery, magic, madness, and more, the series seemed to lose its way in the wilderness. It never fully managed to recapture that first brilliant spark that struck fans hard and fast after the credits rolled on its first season finale. And so, it doesn’t come as a total surprise that Paramount+ has decided to cancel Yellowjackets, although it is electing to conclude it with one final season, the already announced season four. Yellowjackets showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson confirmed that season four would be Yellowjackets‘ final one with a statement. You can read their thoughts about the now-canceled Yellowjackets series below.

Nickerson and Lyle had the following to say about Yellowjackets‘ cancellation and its season four ending:
After three incredible seasons, and great consideration, we’re excited to announce that we will be bringing the story of Yellowjackets to its twisted conclusion in this fourth and final season. We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end, and it’s our belief that our job — our responsibility — is to listen. Telling this emotional, wild, and deeply human story has been a profoundly meaningful experience and a true honor for us, and we’re so very grateful to the brilliant cast, crew and writers who have bravely gone on the journey with us to bring it to life. Most of all, we want to thank the fans who have stuck with us through every moment, mystery and meal — the Hive is nothing without you! We can’t wait to share the final chapter with you and hope you find it … delicious.
Initially, Lyle and Nickerson shared that they had an approximate five-season plan for Yellowjackets, which will now not come to pass. The truth, though, is that shows are being cancelled left and right these days. So receiving the final season treatment is a luxury that not all receive. And, getting four out of five is pretty dang close. Ultimately, it does feel like Yellowjackets doesn’t have that much left to say, except to put an ending on what remains in play. And that’s a true shame, because the storylines in both the adult and teen storylines could have been handled much more deftly to build mystery and interest. But instead, the results were fairly clunky. And so, we have to agree that having season four of Yellowjackets be its final one seems wise.
We will mourn what Yellowjackets could have been, but it does feel like, in this rare instance, the decision to cancel the series is the right one. Still, we will look forward to seeing what Yellowjackets season four has in store for us and what its ending will bring. There is currently no planned release date for the final season of Yellowjackets. Seasons one through three of the now-canceled show are available to stream on Paramount+ and and seasons one and two are on Netflix.
