You might not know this, but one of the most underused productivity tools on your desk is already sitting right under your nose—technically, your hand, but you get the point. The middle mouse button is so much more than just a scroll wheel. So here’s my ode to the overlooked and underappreciated middle child of your mouse.
Most people only use the middle mouse button to scroll and that’s it. But once you learn a few simple tricks, that little button can dramatically speed up how you browse, multitask, and navigate your computer. It’s a small but overlooked tool that can open up a bunch of shortcuts.
Here are the shortcuts worth memorizing:
Browser power-user tricks
- Open links in a new tab instantly: Middle-click any link to open it in a background tab without interrupting your current page.
- Close tabs in one click: Middle-click anywhere on a tab to close it—no need to aim for the tiny “X”.
- Open an entire bookmarks folder at once: Middle-click a folder in your bookmarks bar to launch every site inside it in new tabs.
- Duplicate your current tab: Middle-click the refresh button to instantly clone your current page.
- Open back/forward pages in new tabs: Middle-click the back or forward buttons to open those pages separately, without losing your spot.
- Reopen your last closed tab: Middle-click empty space in the tab bar to reopen the tab you just closed.
Windows & desktop shortcuts
- Open a new instance of an app: Middle-click a taskbar icon (like Chrome or File Explorer) to launch a fresh window.
- Close windows from the taskbar: Hover over an app, then middle-click its preview thumbnail to close it instantly.
- Enable auto-scroll: Click the middle button on a page, then move your mouse to control scrolling speed. The farther you move, the faster it goes.
Once you start using these, they quickly become second nature—and surprisingly addictive. You’ll find yourself reborn as a browser and desktop power-user, flying through tabs and wondering how you ever put up with all those extra right-clicks.
