The Green Lantern Corps has traditionally been pretty inclusive, in terms of different kinds of alien beings. The universe is vast, after all. In fact, prior to Hal Jordan, the Corps had only ever really looked down on the human race. That’s how we can get a Green Lantern like Ch’p, the alien chipmunk. And that’s also how we can get an entire sentient planet. In the most recent episode of HBO Max’s Lanterns, Hal has John Stewart travel to Coast City to retrieve his actual Green Lantern. The pair talk on the phone and Hal mentions the password to his safe is “Mogo doesn’t socialize.” This is two fun references in one!
Who Is Mogo?
Mogo is the Green Lantern of Sector 2261. A massive, sentient planet, Mogo can arrange the foliage on his surface to appear as a Green Lantern symbol visible from far off in space. His intelligence is of the highest level and often manifests as way to guide rings to find their next host and member of the Corps. Mogo creates constructs on and within himself for various purposes and can travel around, though his gravitational field is often too great to be around too many others.
When Parallax destroyed all of the Guardians and the Corp, leaving only the Guardian Ganthet to seek Kyle Rayner to become the sole Green Lantern, Mogo lost connection to the power of the Lantern. As a result, he lost consciousness and drifted through space. Despite this, Mogo’s instincts allow him to defend himself from alien species looking to ransack his natural resources.
Kyle eventually rescues Mogo and, once the Green Lantern Corp is restored, Mogo becomes the planet of both training for Green Lantern recruits and recreation for members. In more recent comics, Mogo became an angry boy, i.e. a Red Lantern.
“Mogo Doesn’t Socialize”
Hal saying “Mogo doesn’t socialize” is a very canny reference. Not only is it just a funny line, it’s also the name of the short comic adventure which introduced him. In a backup feature of Green Lantern Vol 2 #188 from 1985, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen, don’t ya know?) gave us “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” which finds young GL Arisia asking Tomar-Re about the Lanterns who never attend meetings.
Among these include Leezle Pon, a sentient smallpox virus who would obviously infect the others if she attended. Another is Dkrtzy Rrr, a living abstract mathematical progression who actually does attend meetings but only the Guardians can perceive them. The most interesting is Mogo who, because of his size and gravitational field, “doesn’t socialize” with the other Lanterns. Tomar-Re tells Arisia about Bolphunga the Unrelenting, an evil creature who seeks to defeat the most mysterious Lantern of all. After arriving on the planet on which he believes he’ll find this “Mogo,” Bolphunga begins a months-long search until eventually, in terror, realizing the planet itself is Mogo.
Will We See Mogo on Lanterns?
I’d love it if we got to see Mogo on Lanterns, but given how Earthbound the story appears to be, I’d doubt we’ll see him. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see him in the DCU, just as I’d love to see many other Corp members aside from the three Earthlings and Sinestro. Gimme a Kilowog or a Salaak or Katma Tui. But, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll see any of those in Lanterns.
