Do you own a priceless historical text? An ancient relic of grave importance? An item of huge cultural significance? Lock them up, because Nicolas Cage might be coming to steal them. Two years after he said it wasn’t happening, National Treasure 3 is finally in the works after Disney approved the long-awaited sequel’s screenplay.
During an appearance in Philadelphia last week on the National Treasure Hunt podcast (which we first learned about at Deadline), the 2004 original film’s director Jon Turteltaub shared news fans of the franchise have waited a very long time to hear. “I was thinking about mentioning this tonight,” he said. “I’ll say it tonight. It’s happening. You’re the first people I have said this out loud to.” He then added that it’s “finally real” before saying “it’s ‘Hollywood real,’” because if something were to happen to Cage, the movie wouldn’t get made. If something happens to him, Disney will probably still move forward with the movie.
What changed after years of false starts on a third entry? Turteltaub said both he and Disney finally got a script they like. That really means something, too, since he also wrote the 2007 follow-up National Treasure: Book of Secrets. We love both of those movies.
National Treasure 3 will mark the franchise’s first installment since the 2022 Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History. That show starred Catherine Zeta-Jones and ran for one season. Cage did not appear on it. But it sounds like he’ll be front and center when National Treasure returns to the big screen.
What could Ben Gates steal his third time around? We’ve long had some thoughts on that very topic. But it doesn’t matter what item he goes hunting for when he returns. We’ll just be glad to be joining him once again.
But if you own one of those priceless relics you still might want to buy a better lock for it.
