Matthew Lillard is seemingly everywhere right now and living his best life. The actor has been in several high profile projects in the last few years, including the Five Nights at Freddy’s movies, Scream 7, and the upcoming Carrie series by Mike Flanagan. He’s simply living his best horror life. And, additionally, Lillard is celebrating 30 years of Scream and the world’s introduction to Stu Macher. However, during a recent interview, Lillard admitted that he felt “embarrassed” by his choice to return to the Scream franchise after Melissa Barrera’s firing.
According to Rolling Stone, Lillard said he felt a calling to speak up about things that matter in our political landscape. “I don’t know how else to do it,” Lillard responded. “For me, I have queer kids. If I’m not standing up for queer kids or kids in the trans community, then what the f**k am I doing? If I’m not standing up against ICE, then what the f**k am I doing?”
Then, the conversation turned towards the Scream franchise and Barrera’s firing over her social media support for Palestine. “Melissa Barrera, who’s a beautiful actor, was fired for what she said after the whole Palestinian — what started happening in Israel,” Lillard said. “It’s really f**king bulls**t and really hard, and she’s on the right side of history. When they start coming after your job, sometimes things are worth it… When that happened to Melissa, the whole world didn’t pipe up. But she was a year early on what the f**k’s going on. But the whole world should have popped up and said, ‘She’s right.’ And they didn’t. And that’s brutal.”
Nerdist’s Take: Matthew Lillard Speaking on Being Ashamed of Scream 7 Role Is Too Little, Too Late, and He Shouldn’t Have Returned for Many Reasons
He admitted that when he returned to the franchise, he was called out about that and felt embarrassed. Lillard said returning for Scream 7 was a good experience but it may not have been the best idea. We do love Matthew Lillard as an actor and he seems like a cool guy overall. But deciding to be vocal and to stand up for Melissa Barrera feels like too little, too late, especially after the film has already raked in cash at the box office and he’s been paid handsomely to return to the franchise. We do get that actors need jobs to make money, just like we do.
However, considering that he’s not a starring character in Scream 7 but more of a semi plot driver AND he’s in a lot of other projects right now, it feels like he could have easily said no if he really wanted to. He didn’t even have to note Barrera’s firing as a specific reason. Actors decline to return to franchises all the time. Also, Scream 7 was not a good film and did not even use him in a way that was compelling nor effective, so there’s that. It likely took some calling out of his participation by fans to make him feel bad about going for the nostalgia cash grab. And at this point, it may have been better to not even address it and just keep moving forward.
Either way, Scream 7 is done and there’s another film coming up. Lillard’s Stu Macher is definitely dead, so we shouldn’t see him returning to the franchise unless they want to do more ghost killer stuff. And we beg of them… please do not do more ghost killer stuff.
