Skeet Ulrich on His SCREAM Angry Orchard Video Store Pop-Up and More Tai Gooden | usagoldmines.com

Somehow, the first Scream film is turning 30 this year. The film introduced us to some iconic characters, some of whom are still holding down the franchise today, like Sidney and Ghostface. And there are others who continue to hold a special place in fans’ hearts, like the film’s killer duo Billy Loomis and Stu Macher.

To celebrate the franchise’s anniversary, Skeet Ulrich is teaming up with Angry Orchard for an immersive pop-up experience in NYC to celebrate the release of the limited-edition Thriller Variety Pack with all of its chilling flavors, including a Ghostface inspired drink. We caught up with Skeet Ulrich to talk about Scream’s anniversary, this exciting Angry Orchard collaboration, and his deep love for tech and gardening.

Angry Orchard

Nerdist: Before we get into your Angry Orchard collaboration, let’s reflect back. It’s been 30 years since the original Scream movie came out and we met Billy Loomis. And that film and your character specifically continues to resonate with the Scream fandom in ways that almost feel immeasurable. Why do you think this franchise and Billy Loomis are so beloved?

Skeet Ulrich: A bit of it is the genius of Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, who wrote it. It was so irreverent, which kind of feels like the perfect partnership with Angry Orchard, to be honest.
It’s something that it’s hard to know exactly what it is about it that resonates so deeply. But a lot of people I meet at conventions and around talk about how they’ve shared [the film] with family and it’s been handed down generation to generation. Some people call it their comfort movie. It’s like they watched it with their dad, and every time they watch it, they feel like they’re with their dad again… It’s so hard to find movies that span 30 years of interest. And honestly, this Scream fandom is probably stronger now than it’s ever been.

That’s so true. Now you’re celebrating Scream in a whole different way with this Angry Orchard partnership and setting up a really fun Halloween experience in New York City. Can you tell us how this partnership came about and what was it about Angry Orchard that made you want to collaborate with them?

Ulrich: Yeah, it was something that was brought to me through normal business channels. And I’ve been a fan of their brand for a long time and it just feels so right. I mean, their brand feels very much like the film. Witty, like I said, and irreverent. There’s something very Fall about both things. And then when I saw Mystery Caller, the can that they produced with the Scream mask on it, that just seemed perfect. I couldn’t imagine any other brand, to be honest, that would capture the essence of Scream and their own needs as a brand. So yeah, I feel very fortunate they came to me to see if I’d be a part of it.

They fit together so well. We know that you don’t want to give away spoilers or anything like that, but is there anything that you can tease about what fans will be able to expect when they come out to the experience in New York City?

Ulrich: Yeah! It starts on October 2nd. It’s basically a video store similar to the one in the first movie with engagements around the entire store from jump scares to a bar, obviously. I mean, because every video store has a bar [laughs]. There are a lot of experiences to be had. I think it’ll feel very nostalgic and very ’90s and it’s a perfect way to bring Scream and Angry Orchard together.

Love it. At Nerdist, we celebrate all things considered to be nerdy or geeky, like horror, sci-fi, comics, gaming, and so much more. So, Skeet, what do you nerd out about and why do you nerd out about it?

Ulrich: Oh man. I’m more of a technology nerd, I guess. Does that count?

Yes, it sure does! Tech is very geeky.

Ulrich: And I watch a lot of horror movies. Obsession is such a great movie. But yeah, I tend to geek out on sort of home automation, if you will.

What do you mean by that?

Ulrich: Well, I raised twins alone and from the very onset of automation, to be able to turn the light off without having to cross the entire house after a busy day was like, “Oh my God, I got to figure this out.” And obviously that technology’s evolved a lot through the years. Yeah, that’s my inner nerd thing.

That and gardening. I was growing everything. But it got so hot in LA and I’ve been traveling so much, I sort of let things go to seed. I was growing everything from tomatoes, okra, carrots, all kinds of salads, to green beans, snap peas, beets, radishes, and more.
