In Lanterns episode six, we get another fictional city reveal, as we learned that John Stewart lives in Midway City, Michigan. And this reveal may have meaning. In the new DCU, James Gunn has made it clear that in his version of America, real-world cities like New York and LA are replaced with fictional ones from DC Comics. So instead of New York, we have Metropolis; instead of Los Angeles, we have Coast City. This is in contrast to how it actually is in the comics. In the pages of the comics, the fictional cities exist alongside the real ones.
In the DCU, Midway City Probably Replaces Detroit on the Map
In Justice League/Avengers, we even learned that DC Universe Earth is literally bigger than Marvel Universe Earth. This explains why there’s room for so many cities in each state. In the comics, John Stewart hailed from Detroit, MI. But in Lanterns, there probably is no Detroit at all, and the large Michigan community became the fictional Midway City. But that’s a name associated with several DC heroes. It’s just that none of them are actually John Stewart, or even any other Green Lantern.
Midway City in DC Comics Was the Longtime Home Base of Hawkman and Hawkgirl
In the DC Universe, Midway City is located in the state of Michigan. Although it was originally modeled on Chicago. It is supposedly located across from the southern tip of Ontario. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Joe Kubert, the name Midway City instantly suggested the community was located in the Midwest. Years later, DC would confirm Midway City was in the state of Michigan. It was first introduced in 1961’s The Brave and the Bold #34, as the home of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Carter Hall, the human alias of Katar Hol, the alien Hawkman, was the curator at the Midway City Museum. Hawkman and Hawkgirl made Midway their home base for decades.
The Doom Patrol Also Called Midway City Home
Usually, in DC Comics, one fictional city is the home to one high-profile hero. Or, in the case of Batman and Superman, one high-profile hero with many sidekicks who call it home too. But Midway City was the big exception to that rule. In the mid-sixties, the city also became home to the Doom Patrol, the strange band of freaks led by eccentric scientist Niles Caulder. The original version of the Doom Patrol eventually died (at least for a little while), and for a long time, Hawkman and Hawkgirl were the city’s sole superheroic protectors. But when they too disappeared, Midway City became vulnerable. And the events of DC’s Final Crisis left much of it destroyed.
Midway City is Mostly Forgotten in Modern DC Comics
In the comics, Midway City doesn’t have much of a distinct personality besides “mid-sized Midwestern town.” It’s not gothic and oppressive like Gotham City, or an idealized Art Deco New York like Metropolis. And even though heroes like the Hawks and the Doom Patrol have long since come back to DC continuity, they tend to make other cities their base of operations these days. It’s now more of a relic of Silver Age DC Comics stories than actively used. But occasionally, you see it mentioned, particularly in comics like The Flash, or more recently, World’s Finest.
Nerdist’s Take: Midway City in Lanterns May Hint at Major Heroes Existing in the DCU
Even more than in the comics, we suspect the DCU’s Midway City is just a complete stand-in for Detroit. However, if the DCU Hawkgirl comes from Midway, and so does John, that just adds fuel to our theory that these two become a power couple in the DCU. Just as they are in the animated Justice League series. And maybe a DCU Doom Patrol lives there as well. We’ll have to wait and see if the name Midway City was just a throwaway reference, or will actually matter to the DCU as a whole. But it just might be a clue to some other major DC characters.
