We know, even if in only minor ways, the Green Lantern Guy Gardner took a little bit of inspiration from the Man of Steel himself in Superman (2025). The stalwart superhero was able to convince Guy and his fellow Justice Gang members to join him in doing the right thing with regard to stopping Boravia from invading Jarhanpur (again). We can call that a pretty big inspiration. But Guy also, we learned in Lanterns episode six, “Bad Optics,” ripped off another pretty well-known hero we haven’t seen in the DCU (in live-action) yet. A certain Batman.
Episode six jumped to 2026 following the horrible devastation in the 2016 storyline. John Stewart has become an architect and works with his brother Marcus designing and building fancy high-rise buildings with panic rooms. Ahead of an important pitch with Midway City officials, John receives a call from his mother, Bernadette. She tells him he should go see Hal Jordan, who wants to apologize.
Against his better judgment, John does drive to Rushville, NE, where Hal has relocated after his release from prison. We later learn that Hal had gone to Rushville to make amends, though the people despise him, and to get together with the now-divorced Sheriff Kerry Kane. However, when John arrives at the diner, not only is Hal surprised to see him, the former Green Lantern has no intention of apologizing?
Now, what does any of this have to do with Guy Gardner and Batman? Hal explains to John how much the people of Rushville hate all Green Lanterns, and despite this, Guy donated a Lantern Signal for the citizenry to light whenever they need him. Hal says the “gym teacher” ripped off “that Bat Guy from Gotham.”
This is the first time anyone in live-action DCU has mentioned Batman, though not fully by name. Viewers have previously seen a glimpse of Batman in Gotham City, as well among other dead heroes in a vision, in Creature Commandos. Lanterns had previously established Sheriff Kerry Kane (Kelly MacDonald) came from Gotham. It’s possible Hal is deriding Batman, but it could also be, at this point in the DCU, Batman isn’t super well known outside of his home city. It’s also very funny that Guy couldn’t even think of a more efficient method for getting his attention than a LIGHT. I get it’s thematic, but still.
Later in the episode, John lights the beacon, which does actually summon Guy. However, it takes several hours. Better late than never, I guess. We also see in teaser material for one of the last two episodes that John uses the beacon again, which Guy chides him for, saying it should only be for emergencies.
The people of Rushville have vandalized the beacon with a dick-and-balls graffiti. And, in fairness, the monument, just on the sidewalk of the main drag, doesn’t elicit much awe. The citizens want nothing to do with the Green Lanterns, no matter who they are, and unlike Commissioner Gordon with the Bat-Signal, John lighting the Lantern-Signal leads to people threatening violence against him.
Still, we know the beacon works. Ergo, a Green Lantern ripping off Batman wasn’t a bad idea.
