WANDAVISION Creator Jac Schaeffer Developing STARGATE Series Kyle Anderson | usagoldmines.com

One of Amazon MGM’s most important legacy IPs by a factor of eight million is Stargate. This is why the studio needs to ensure the next thing they do with it has the requisite heft. This is a franchise with a movie and three different series. One of those series, Stargate SG-1, has over 200 episodes and a still-rabid fanbase. It’s because of that, possibly, that Amazon announced a new series last year only to scrap it earlier this year. Now, Amazon has announced (via Variety) they’ve tapped WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer to helm a new Stargate show for Prime.

The news cites this as part of Schaeffer’s overall deal at Amazon MGM. Schaeffer also expects to start a writers room in the near future. Schaeffer will also executive produce the new Stargate alongside Obi-Wan Kenobi and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell.

This will be yet another big property for Schaeffer to tackle. Creating Marvel Television’s WandaVision, Schaeffer became one of the more sought-after showrunners. That show garnered dozens of accolades, making it one of the most critically acclaimed series of 2021 and beyond. (Look, we know not a lot came out in 2021, but it was still really good.) She followed that up by creating, writing, and directing Agatha All Along in 2024. She serves as executive producer of VisionQuest but is not credited as creator.

Stargate began in 1994 as a film from director Roland Emmerich. It followed a group of military and science people who research and traverse a literal gate that transports people and things to another planet, where all the Ancient Egyptians went. I maybe haven’t watched it in a while. The movie was a suitable hit and the spinoff series, Stargate SG-1, premiered in 1997. The show aired for five seasons on Showtime before jumping to Sci-Fi for seasons 6-10.

After SG-1, further series—Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe—took the franchise up to 2011, amid several TV movies and spinoff novels and comics. For the past 15 years, the title has lain fallow. Amazon putting Schaeffer on the series shows they care about bringing the franchise back in a big way.
