Is your graphics card getting too hot? This tip will boost its performance | usagoldmines.com

Graphics cards don’t simply die of old age — they usually suffocate due to neglect. The biggest enemy is dust, which settles on the cooling fins like an insulating layer and sabotages the cooling performance. However, before you take any action, you should carry out a professional diagnosis. Use the free tool Hwinfo for this.

Launch the program in ‘Sensors only’ mode and look for the ‘GPU Hotspot Temperature’ reading under your graphics card. This reading represents the hottest spot directly on the silicon chip. Compare it with the normal ‘GPU Temperature,’ which is the average reading. A difference (delta) of more than 20 degrees Celsius under full load is a clear warning sign.

It suggests that contact between the chip and the cooler is poor — for example, because the thermal paste has dried out or is unevenly distributed. If the delta is as high as 30 degrees Celsius or more, the card will already be significantly throttling its clock speed to prevent damage (thermal throttling).

The first step in maintenance is cleaning: To do this, first shut down the PC, press the power button, and unplug the power cable. Open the case and blow out the cooling fins with compressed air. Important: Make sure you hold the fan blades in place with your finger or a piece of adhesive tape.

If fans spin up uncontrollably due to the compressed air, they can act like a dynamo and send electrical voltages back into the motherboard or destroy their own bearings. If simply cleaning isn’t enough, it’s time to replace the thermal paste.

Note: Repasting a GPU could void the warranty for certain models and manufacturers. Check your documentation for details.

Conventional thermal paste is an option, but some users prefer phase-change material (PCM), such as the PTM7950 thermal pad. The name derives from the material’s physical property of being solid at room temperature (in a pad form) but liquefying at temperatures of around 45 to 55 degrees Celsius.

This phase change ensures that the material perfectly fills microscopic irregularities when warm, while it solidifies again when cooled. This prevents the dreaded “pump-out” effect, whereby traditional thermal pastes are gradually squeezed out of the gap due to the thermal expansion of the chip.

Applying PTM7950 requires care: Place the pad in the fridge or freezer for around 10 to 60 minutes before use. When cold, it is firmer and much easier to cut to size and remove the protective films. At room temperature, however, it is very sticky. Clean the graphics chip thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol (over 90 percent) and a lint-free cloth.

Cut the pad exactly to the size of the GPU chip, peel off the first protective film, position it centrally, and then carefully remove the second film. For the surrounding memory modules (VRAM) and voltage regulators, you should use thermal putty (thermal conductive putty). Unlike rigid thermal pads, putty is highly compressible.

This is crucial, as pads that are too thick can easily lift the cooler, thereby reducing the contact pressure on the main chip (GPU). This, in turn, leads to poorer temperature performance. Putty, on the other hand, adapts perfectly to any gap and guarantees maximum contact with the main processor.

By combining these proactive steps of cleaning and material optimization, you can transform your PC into a high-performance, long-lasting ecosystem that will serve you faithfully for many years to come.
