The Star Trek franchise is full of “what ifs” and “almost were” projects. This goes back to the ’70s, with the TV series Star Trek: Phase II, and up to the modern day, with Star Trek: Legacy never receiving a greenlight. But the one we just learned about that also never came to fruition truly broke our hearts. Actor James McAvoy, who famously played a younger version of Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier in four X-Men films, pitched playing a younger version of Stewart’s other most famous character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He revealed this to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. In fact, he pitched a full season to Paramount+, but for various reasons, it never happened. Here’s what he had to say:
All I really want to do in my career is play young versions of Patrick. “Mutiny on the Stargazer” was a whole idea that I pitched to the Star Trek people. We nearly did it. I’ve got a whole story about an early Picard. I pitched a one-off, standalone season. [It was about] when he took over as Captain of the Stargazer, what actually happened, and the secret he’s been holding his entire career. I just pitched it to them, and they were well in it. But we hit logistical issues, and we couldn’t do it. But I love that story, and I just go to bed and think about it at night.

As true Star Trek: The Next Generation fans know, Picard commanded the U.S.S. Stargazer for over twenty years. He assumed command at a young age, and his best friend, Jack Crusher, became his first officer. He lost the ship about nine years before he took command of the Enterprise-D. Much of his time on the Stargazer remains a mystery, except in some non-canon novels and comics. This project would have been a fascinating look at the “lost era” of Trek canon, between the end of the original series crew feature films and TNG.
Nerdist’s Take: While We Think a Live-Action TV Version Highly Unlikely, We Hope to See McAvoy’s Story Adapted Somewhere
So could this still happen? The Star Trek franchise, especially on TV, is in hibernation mode right now. There are no new live-action Star Trek series in production, and only a movie in early development. Not to mention, James McAvoy is now the exact same age as Patrick Stewart was when he started playing Jean-Luc in 1987. So the window to play “young Picard” might have closed for him. But maybe McAvoy can tell this story in another form, like animation or comics. After all, we know McAvoy is very good at evoking Stewart. James McAvoy giving fans a young Jean-Luc Picard sounds like a Trekker’s dream come true.
