Reviews for Appleās newest device, the iPhone Duo, are beginning to hit the web. People are testing the hinge system, foldable display, cameras, and the software that Apple rolled out on the device. This being Appleās first go at a foldable device, we have been watching closely to see what reactions to this $2,000 device would be.
Overall, impressions have been positive, but users are coming away with a few negatives that Apple can either address in software updates or tackle in future generations. For example, it took Samsung quite a long time to provide a camera system worthy of the Galaxy Z Fold price tag. It appears Apple made a similar call with the camera system that comes with the 1st-generation iPhone Duo.
One thing nearly all reviewers are praising is the hinge system as being super smooth when compared to other foldables. Also celebrated is the IP68 rating, great battery life, audio from its staggered dual speakers (that was a really nice touch from Apple), and MagSafe compatibility. However, what good are pros if we donāt have a few cons?
iPhone Duo Review Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Top-tier Engineering: Ultra-smooth hinge, robust titanium frame, and built-in IP68 rating. | Price: At $1,999+, it is strictly for affluent enthusiasts and early adopters. |
| Exceptional Battery Life: Lasts nearly two full days under normal usage despite dual displays. | Middling Cameras: Lacks a dedicated telephoto lens; photos are good, but inferior to the iPhone Pro line. |
| Display & Audio: Interior matte display reduces reflections, paired with remarkably loud stereo speakers. | Software Growing Pains: Many third-party apps letterbox or arenāt yet optimized for the main screen layout. |
| MagSafe Built-In: Unlike many foldable competitors, it retains magnetic accessory support out of the box. | Ergonomic Tweaks: Uses side-button Touch ID instead of Face ID; heavy at ~254 grams. |
The Cameras: Pricing aside, there are two issues that weāre seeing pop up. The camera system isnāt equal to that which you find on the iPhone Pro devices. There is no dedicated telephoto lens, with Apple opting for its Dual Fusion system with 2x optical zoom to be its main shooter. Again, the beauty is that Apple can simply continue improving the cameras on the iPhone Duo year over year and have that be a main selling point for people to upgrade. All other companies do this. It literally took Samsung seven years to provide a camera system we deemed worthy of spending nearly $2K on, so keep that in mind.
Software and Apps: The major pain point weāre seeing has to do with software and apps. It appears that many apps have yet to be updated to support the displays on the iPhone Duo, with a lot of letterboxing taking place. That means a large portion of the display is black and not used to show information. To me, this is something Apple can begin to work on immediately and fix with software updates, as well as releasing tools for 3rd-party developers to either stretch their apps for a fullscreen appearance or something along those lines. Itās definitely an issue that needs to be resolved, but shouldnāt be a dealbreaker and will likely be remedied down the road.
Reviewers are one thing, but it will be interesting to see how the needle moves after real buyers get their hands on this device. Ship times for iPhone Duo are pushed to nearly 2027 for some folks, so itāll be a while before everyone can get their hands on this highly anticipated device. If you ordered one, we hope you love it. If you donāt want to wait, you can always buy a Galaxy Z Fold 8. Itās a really awesome foldable. Pixel 11 Pro Fold is also a really great choice. Most importantly, there are plenty of awesome options on the market for foldables right now.
