The first trailer for I Play Rocky sort of broke my brain. Star Anthony Ippolito looks and sounds so much like Sylvester Stallone, his performance almost seems too good. Plus, the film itself—the story of how Rocky got made—is so similar to Rocky, it almost seems like this is a de facto remake. But despite my misgivings, those who have attended early screenings say the movie is a winner. And that early buzz is why the newest trailer for I Play Rocky plays a lot differently.
The story about an unlikely success story is getting its own film. I Play Rocky will take viewers behind the camera to see how a nobody actor not only wrote a Best Picture winner, but also one of the most beloved movies of all time. And he fought to make sure he’d get to star in it. Here’s the film’s official synopsis from Amazon MGM Studios:
The film is an electrifying true story about an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky—he was meant to be Rocky Balboa. Told “no” at every turn, Sylvester Stallone bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds. The result is the ultimate underdog story behind the ultimate underdog movie.
I Play Rocky comes from director Peter Farrelly with a script from Peter Gamble. It also stars AnnaSophia Robb, Toby Kebbell, P.J. Byrne, Jay Duplass, Kiki Seto, Matt Dillon, Stephan James, and Tracy Letts.
Will it deliver a feel-good winner just like a no-name actor did in 1976? Or will I Play Rocky feel like it’s just replaying the same beats that made Rocky a hit? We’ll all find out soon enough. The movie will arrive in select theaters starting on November 6 before it opens everywhere on November 20.
