Easter eggs in Star Wars movies are usually discovered right away. But there was a pretty big Easter egg in The Phantom Menace that remained hidden for over 25 years. It just happened to be a cameo of “The Maker” himself, George Lucas. If you look very closely at a scene toward the end of the film, in a hall in Queen Amidala’s palace on the planet Naboo, you can see George Lucas’ face etched onto a stone archway. (You can see it at the one hour, 58 minutes, and 17 seconds mark.) Writer Clayton Sandell discovered this, during an interview with matte artist Caroleen “Jett” Green. The former ILM artist snuck Lucas’ image into the film, where it remained undiscovered for decades.

Green is a veteran matte painter, with a pretty incredible resume to her name. She lent her artistic talent to iconic movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Labyrinth, the Goonies, Independence Day, Titanic, and several Star Trek films. After leaving Industrial Light & Magic for a bit, she returned when George Lucas began working on the prequels in the late ’90s. Lucasfilm tasked her with creating the matte painting “set extensions” for the Naboo royal palace in the city of Theed. And that’s when she decided to sneak in an image of her bearded boss just for fun.

Green told Sendall that as she was painting the palace interior, she realized that an oval area atop the arch had a plaque had a blank space. Green said “I decided to get a picture of George, and I put it on this plaque. I thought, ‘Well, that’ll be cool. By the time you shrink that down, his face is just a blur.” It was so blurry, no one noticed it until she spilled the beans. At first, she was worried Lucas wouldn’t be happy about it. But all he said when she revealed it was “Oh, naughty, naughty.” But then he just said “Okay. Leave it in.” Lucas later cameoed in the flesh in Revenge of the Sith. But this counts as his first appearance in his iconic saga. Unless there’s another secret cameo we’ve yet to discover. When it comes to Star Wars, there are always new revelations.
