One of the easiest ways to create your own, customized Gemini chatbot is about to be retired, but we just got a pair of encouraging updates about their replacements.
We learned earlier this week that skills, a Gemini feature that was previously reserved for the Gemini Spark AI assistant, would step in for Gems, and that existing Gems would be converted to skills in the runup to the November sunset date.
One of the big questions about skills, which are essentially custom instructions for Gemini that can be summoned within a prompt, was whether they’d be available to free as well as paid users. Previously, you could only use skills with the Spark agent, and Spark is reserved for paid Gemini AI users.
But in an updated shared Wednesday, Google announced that Gemini skills will be available for any Gemini users over 18 with a personal Google account.
Google added that skills will also be upgraded with missing features included in Gems, such as the ability to share skills with other users. You’ll also be able to add files from Google Drive as well as notebooks from Gemini Notebook.
Existing Gems will be converted to skills automatically, Google confirmed, or you can do the conversion manually if you wish.
Personal Gemini Gems will be retired starting in November, Google said, while Gems created by Google Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit accounts will stick around until March 2027. Gems for Workspace education accounts won’t go dark until June 2027.
Unlike Gems, which are essentially self-contained, Gemini-powered chatbots with their own instructions and knowledge files, skills can be invoked within any Gemini chat session by typing “/,” and you can even call a skill within another skill, allowing for powerful AI workflows.
News that Google is phasing out Gems in favor of Gemini skills comes about two weeks after word surfaced that OpenAI is nixing custom GPTs, which (like Gemini Gems) allow you to create customized ChatGPT chatbots. Custom GPTs will be replaced by ChatGPT plugins.
