A couple of major changes are coming to the way your Android phone processes/stores backups. Within the next 45 days or so, Google is going to start counting your Android device backups toward your Google Account storage limit, but they are also giving you more controls over what’s backed up.
Google made the announcement over the weekend in an email that should have gone out to everyone with an Android phone. In the email titled, “New Android Backup Storage Policy & Controls,” Google explains the two big changes and also what your current storage status is, in case you might need to buy more.
The biggest change here is that Android device backups are now counting toward your Google Account storage limit. Everything in Google Photos, as well as your MMS data, already counts, but now we’re adding on SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app settings.
For most of you, this might not change much, assuming you’ve upgraded to any of the Google One storage plans and aren’t still relying on free Google Account storage. Like with any storage solution, should you run oiut of storage, automatic backups of your device will pause until there is free space.
For new controls, Google is rolling out granular app backup toggles within your Android backup settings. You can now toggle on a per app basis for every single app on your device that might want to back something up. You also have toggles for SMS and MMS messages, call history, and device settings.
Here’s a portion of the email that you should have received:
- The Policy Update: Effective in 45 days, all data included in your Android device backups will begin counting toward your Google Account storage limit. Photos and videos in Google Photos and MMS data already count toward your Google Account storage today. With this change all other backed-up data such as SMS messages, call history, device settings, and app settings will also count toward your Google Account storage. The storage used by your device backup may increase once this policy takes effect. If your Google Account exceeds its storage limit, your automatic backups will pause until you free up space or upgrade your plan.
- New Controls for You: With this change, we are also introducing granular app backup toggles in your Android backup settings. If you are on Android 9 or higher, you can now select exactly which data types and individual apps you want to back up, ensuring you only use storage for what matters most to you.
