Well, we should have known nothing good can last. Even though episode six of The Vampire Lestat was harrowing throughout in many ways, it also featured the reconciliation of Lestat and Louis. LouStat was even planning a quiet future together when… Oops. They lost their heads. Okay, they didn’t lose them. Armand and Daniel came out of the shadows and cut their heads off in an unceremonious beheading. Yikes! But are Lestat and Louis dead in The Vampire Lestat? And why on earth would Armand and Daniel suddenly decide on decapitation for their favorite exs/frenemies/friends/it’s complicated pair of vampires? The Vampire Lestat has tucked some answers into its narrative, and others we will have to wait to understand.

Armand and Daniel Behead Louis and Lestat in The Vampire Lestat Episode 6, Making Us Think They Might Be Dead
It all happened pretty suddenly. One moment, Lestat and Louis are enjoying one another’s company on a bench. The next thing we know, the vampire Alex distracts Lestat and Louis, and snikt, Armand and Daniel have cut off their heads. It’s not quite the Devil’s Minion Halloween scene we were hoping for, but, uhm, the pair finally seems to be unified in their aims, at least?
The beheading of Louis and Lestat is quite bloody and totally complete. Their heads literally fall off their bodies. And yeah, we can see why that would make folks think Lestat and Louis are now dead on The Vampire Lestat. But… they are vampires. And it turns out, the season has been preparing us for exactly this since episode three.
The Vampire Lestat Has Been Telling Us Vampires Can Survive Decapitation ALL Season

Vampire decapitation has actually been a recurring theme in The Vampire Lestat this season. In episode one, we see Lestat get nearly decapitated. Then, in episode three, we see Louis behead a vampire as he wreaks vengeance on the Vampire Bruce. The vampire that Louis beheads actually survives decapitation for a good minute, even though he’s ostensibly quite weak. Elsewhere in episode three, Doctor Fareed explains that vampires can survive decapitation. And confirms that Lestat himself would likely survive losing his head for about 10 hours. That’s quite some time for Armand to reattach Lestat’s head, which, all things held equal, we know he kind of likes on Lestat’s body. Lestat’s ability to survive for so long stems from the fact that he has the blood of Akasha, the oldest vampire, in his veins. But what about Louis? Well, we don’t know that Louis can avoid death by beheading the way Lestat can in The Vampire Lestat. But he does share Lestat’s blood, hinting it’s quite possible for him, too.
Armand and Daniel’s Decapitation May Be in Service of Saving the World (But It Still Isn’t Very Nice)
Listen, Armand and Daniel and Lestat and Louis have a complicated tangle of relationships in The Vampire Lestat. There’s love, hate, resentment, attraction, anger, and affection flowing in a hundred different combinations between the four. But, at this point in the narrative, it doesn’t feel like Armand and Daniel want Lestat and Louis dead just for the sake of their deaths. Sure, they might be pissed off at them for a number of things, a sentiment that goes both ways, but dead? That seems extreme even for this devilish duo.

Instead of Lestat and Louis’ deaths, Armand and, with him, Daniel, are probably after something that we can pin down in episode four of The Vampire Lestat. In his reunion with Lestat, Lestat guesses that Armand wants him to stop singing his songs and inciting the Great Conversion. He says, “You want me to stop playing music. The vampires are listening to my songs. They believe they can live as I do. They’re making too many. The mortals won’t allow it. The planet can’t support it.” To which Armand agrees, “Yes.” So, truly, it feels like this Louis and Lestat beheading is a misguided attempt to stop the end of the world as everyone knows it.

The Great Conversion Is Probably a Bad Idea
Although we are habitual Armand Apologizers here at Nerdist Dot Com, we do have to say that Armand has a point about the Great Conversion and the dangers it holds for all vampires. If there are too many vampires and not enough humans, the vampiric species will not be long for this world. Humans are a vampire’s primary food source after all. Also, having too many powerful beings on one planet can only spell disaster. Even Louis seems dubious about the idea of the Great Conversion. And Lestat himself seems to be contributing to the movement to humor his mother/lover Gabriella, at best.

We’re not against the idea of vampires unifying, maybe even living better lives—the five Great Laws are unhelpful and antiquated. No one wants a vampire curfew. But, probably a Great Conversion of thousands of vampires isn’t the way to go either. And bringing all of these vampires into one space, right now, when there isn’t yet much unity, isn’t exactly a safe or sane vision. Now, that’s not to say beheading Lestat and Louis, and putting them in danger of actually being dead, was the right way to go about things. But… Armand’s vision of achieving his own survival is often punctuated by mess.
So Are Louis and Lestat Really Dead in The Vampire Lestat?
I mean, there’s a small chance that Lestat and Louis are really dead in The Vampire Lestat. But it doesn’t seem truly likely to me. Does it seem truly likely to you? I’d bet some money on Armand and Daniel taking Louis and Lestat somewhere far from the Great Conversion concert venue, then reattaching their heads when the danger of the world ending has passed. Probably before either one of them has actually died.

As mentioned, vampires can live without their heads and even get them back on straight once they’ve lost them. Vampire life lies truly in the heart, the blood-pumping organ. And for now, Louis and Lestat’s hearts are safe in their bodies.
