Assad Zaman on Armand Turning Daniel Out of Spite: ‘That’s Louis’ Opinion’ Rotem Rusak | usagoldmines.com

During the finale episode of Interview with the Vampire season two, fans were treated to a big surprise. Diverging from the canon of the Anne Rice novels, Eric Bogosian’s Daniel Molloy was turned into a vampire years later than he originally was in the story. Though his vampiric maker, Armand, remains the same in both cases. In Interview with the Vampire season two, little is revealed about the circumstances of Daniel’s turning, except for one line from Louis de Pointe du Lac. Louis tells Daniel in the season’s final scene, “I’m sorry you were burdened out of spite…I shouldn’t have left you alone with him.” Now, if you’re familiar with the source material or the fandom, you may understand why this sentiment has sat poorly with a subset of fans, namely those who support Devil’s Minion, the canon romance between Daniel and Armand. In the lead-up to The Vampire Lestat, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Assad Zaman, who plays Armand in the show, and I asked him the question on all our minds. Did Armand turn Daniel Molloy into a vampire out of spite?

Zaman laughs at my question when I ask him what he thinks about Louis’ judgment on the matter, turning it over in his head. He keeps his answer short, but full of grin and shrug. “That’s Louis’ opinion,” he offers in response, “That’s what Louis thinks.” I wouldn’t call his answer snarky, but there’s a little bit of flippancy to it and a good amount of what feels like slight evasion. In any case, he doesn’t say it’s true. And when we consider the source, Louis has many reasons to think poorly of Armand, after all. So maybe we can’t fully trust his opinion on the matter, especially considering he wasn’t actually there.

As to what was going through Armand’s head when he turned Daniel Molloy into a vampire, that’s a more complicated question. Here’s what Zaman shares, “Vampirism to Armand, I think, acts like a form of self-flagellation, similar to the way prayer and punishment go hand in hand.” When Armand turns Daniel, “He’s punishing a man whom he also worships in a fucked up way.”

Well, a delicious mix of punishment and worship sounds better to me than spite. Although I’m still not quite ready to let go of the vision of Daniel’s turning from the books. In the chapter The Story of Daniel the Devil’s Minion, or the Boy from Interview with the Vampire from Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice, we receive the story of Armand and Daniel’s messed-up, but actually quite lovely (considering they are both messed up) relationship. The chapter culminates with Armand turning Daniel into a vampire to save him from death. But there’s certainly no spite between the pair. Armand manifests glorious visions of ancient ruins, blooming flowers, and gleaming stars when he takes Daniel’s mortal life and makes him a vampire. He even invites Lestat, Louis, and other vampiric friends there to support Daniel in the change. It’s honestly one of the most beautifully romantic scenes I’ve read in literature.

When I ask Zaman if any of that romance will be maintained when Armand turns Daniel into a vampire in the series, he offers, “You’ll just have to see, I think.” Last year, when I asked Eric Bogosian, who plays Daniel Molloy, the same question, he shared, “I feel that Armand’s love for Daniel is like when a kid has a stuffed animal, and he drags it around with him for like years until it has one button, and a hole for an eye. And he loves that little stuffed animal. So, it’s as romantic as that can be.”

Well, alright. As long as it’s romantic! And not totally spiteful.
