Could PHYSINT Be Kojima’s METAL GEAR SOLID Successor? Jess Harshbarger | usagoldmines.com

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and Xbox is publishing Physint after Sony abruptly cut ties with Kojima Productions. Better yet, the lead actor has been announced—Bill Skarsgård (It, Nosferatu) has been cast as the player character! Along with his physical appearance and voice, he’ll lend motion-capture and facial-capture to the project, similar to Norman Reedus in Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding. This comes on the heels of Sony trying to cancel Physint due to budget concerns, and a series of missed deadlines. Clearly, Sony needed another hundred million or two to pour into more ‘live services’. Hideo Kojima didn’t particularly like the idea of his game getting binned, so he took his ball and went home to Xbox, who he is already partnered with for OD-KNOCK, the studio’s long-teased horror game.

The title, Physint, runs down the middle. At the bottom of the poster it reads, "The Next Cold War Begins".

Physint Could Be The Spiritual Successor to Metal Gear Solid

Skarsgård joins Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe as the main cast for Physint. Kojima states Physint will be “a next generation action-espionage game”, calling back to the sub-subtitle of the Metal Gear Solid series: Tactical Espionage Action. Konami may have the Metal Gear Solid IP, but the spirit of the legendary stealth-action series is firmly with Hideo Kojima, who is both writing and directing Physint. It’ll be fascinating to watch Bill Skarsgård flex his impressive acting chops in a Kojima-created world.

“Physint is the culmination of forty years of my career: a project that will redefine ‘action-espionage’, unbound by any existing genres in digital entertainment.”Hideo Kojima

With some principal photography done by Hideo Kojima himself, we now have a poster for the game, featuring Skarsgård and Charlee Fraser. The poster reads “The next cold war begins” at the bottom, joining “Here comes the feeling” as Physint‘s tag-lines. Still no trailer or release date for the game, though. Back in 2025, Kojima mentioned that he suspected the game would be in development for another five or six years. Once Kojima Productions recovers fully from the Sony split, hopefully we’ll learn more about the studio’s ambitious new project.
