A Michigan man has lost $37,000 after being manipulated by scammers posing as tech support and a bank representative.
Steven Cooke of Plymouth says the scam began on March 20th, when a pop-up warning appeared on his laptop claiming his system had been compromised, reports the NBC-Affiliated WDIV Local 4.
A caller identifying herself as Veronica J. Wilson alleged his identity was tied to criminal activity and pressured him to act quickly.
At that point a second person joined the call, claiming to be a JPMorgan Chase named Richard Lee.
The impersonator told Cooke that funds had been withdrawn from his accounts and instructed him to recover the money by withdrawing cash and depositing it into a Bitcoin ATM.
Despite growing suspicion, Cooke ultimately deposited $37,000.
The scam unraveled only after the fraudsters pushed him to withdraw additional funds, prompting him to contact the real bank.
Cooke has reported the incident to authorities including the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
