One of the most iconic monsters in Greek mythology is getting her own movie. According to a report in Deadline, Disney has hired writer Michael Montemayor (Tangled) to write a screenplay based on the legendary gorgon, Medusa. The iconic creature, whose hair is a tangled nest of living snakes, had the power to turn anyone into stone who looked at her. In Greek myths, the heroic demigod Perseus famously killed Medusa, after which he used her decapitated head as a weapon. Most remember the Perseus vs. Medusa sequence as a memorable one in the ’80s fantasy film Clash of the Titans. A scene that traumatized a generation of children.
In Greek mythology, Medusa is one of three Gorgon sisters, with the others being Euryale and Stheno, daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. The character has had a big pop culture presence thanks to movies, TV, games, and comics. She’s an antagonist in the Percy Jackson series, and became one of Wonder Woman’s main foes. Diana Prince even blinded herself in order to defeat her once. She is also in the God of War video game. Her face is even part of the logo for the iconic fashion house, Versace. As for why Disney is developing a Medusa-centric movie now, Disney probably saw the ratings success of its Percy Jackson Disney+ series, and the massive box office of The Odyssey this year. Look no further than that.
Nerdist’s Take: We Have a Feeling Disney’s Medusa Goes Down the Wicked and Maleficent Route.
Producing this film for Disney is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with his Seven Bucks production company. As of now, we’re not expecting him to star in it. We feel that just a decade ago, he would have tried to play Perseus. But who knows? He’ll probably throw himself in there somewhere, maybe playing Zeus in a cameo role. There are no details on the script yet. But since we’re talking about a Disney film, we would not be surprised if this became a “misunderstood villain” story like Maleficent, Cruella, or Wicked. A Medusa film seems tailor-made for that. As of now, no director or star is attached. But we expect to hear more very soon.
