According to Cointelegraph, crypto scammers in Kent, England, stole $1.2 million from nine victims by pretending to be police officers and crypto wallet providers.
The scam was so well-organized that victims thought they were dealing with actual law enforcement officers. Unfortunately, their crypto wallet funds were gone for good when they realized the truth.
How the Crypto Scam Worked
The scammers started by obtaining personal details from a data leak—possibly from a hacked database. Using this information, they created fake reports that appeared to be from Action Fraud, the UK’s official fraud-reporting center.
With these fake reports, the scammers contacted victims, pretending to be the police. They told them they were under investigation and should expect a follow-up call from their crypto wallet provider.

Sure enough, a second call came from a so-called “security officer.” The scammer forced people to show their seed phrases because he said it was fundamental to secure their funds. They rebuilt the wallets by exploiting the seed phrases to steal the entire cryptocurrency value.

- Always keep your seed phrase confidential; do not reveal it to anyone.
- Be skeptical of urgent requests. Authority representatives never push victims to make rushed decisions.
