Google Health was supposed to deliver us into the future of health and fitness tracking. With a refreshed app, Apple Health syncing, and a bundle of other new features, including a Google Health Coach, we were initially pretty excited when it launched back in May.
Today, my feelings about it have certainly changed (more on that next week), and part of it is the Google Health Coach that always seems to show up at the oddest of times. It’s usefulness has also become questionable.
In a new update to the Google Health app (5.06) that is rolling out now, Google is introducing a way for you to turn off the Google Health Coach from the Today tab. If you would rather your Today tab be cleaner, without all of the chit-chat, the time has come.
The update introduces two controls: “Standard” and “No Coach insights.” If you choose the “No Coach Insights” option, Google says that your Today tab will be streamlined and “focused on activity and sleep summaries.” That sounds pretty great.
To get to this setting, you’ll open Google Health, tap your profile icon, then “Google Health settings,” and then “Coach.”
The update also brings improved maps.

New Google Health Coach Settings
We’re introducing new settings that give you more control over how your Google Health Coach appears on your Today tab. You can now customize your daily view to match your preferred level of guidance. You can choose from two options:
- “Standard” (default): Enjoy the full Google Health Coach experience with proactive, conversational insights and daily summaries directly on your Today tab..
- “No Coach insights”: Keep a streamlined Today tab focused on activity and sleep summaries, without coaching insights.
On-demand access always stays on: In either mode, you can still ask your coach questions anytime and access your active fitness plans on the Fitness tab.
To manage your settings, tap your profile icon, then “Google Health settings”, and then “Coach”.
Fitness and Activity Updates
- Improved Maps: We have resolved issues that prevented maps from displaying correctly and fixed errors related to how heart rate zones and pace are shown on maps.
