IBM announced a new partnership with OpenAI on August 13, 2026. The deal will bring OpenAI’s newest AI tools into IBM Consulting Advantage, the company’s internal AI platform for consultants.
The tools include GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work. IBM consultants will use these products while working on client projects.
The two companies plan to focus on finance, government, telecommunications, and retail. These are areas where IBM already has a large consulting presence.
Three Focus Areas of the Partnership
The partnership covers three main areas of work. The first area involves helping businesses move from older manual processes to AI-driven ones.
This includes tasks like financial reporting, procurement, customer service, and human resources. IBM says AI can speed up these processes for large companies.
The second area is software development. IBM consultants will use Codex and ChatGPT Work to help modernize outdated business applications.
The third area is cybersecurity. IBM will expand its use of OpenAI’s Daybreak and Autonomous Security tools to help find software weaknesses and manage security operations.
IBM also created a new OpenAI Practice as part of the deal. The company says thousands of consultants and engineers will complete certifications through the OpenAI Partner Network.
IBM will also build teams that can work with on-premises AI systems. As part of the agreement, IBM joins OpenAI’s Elite Partner tier.
OpenAI Gains Access to IBM’s Global Network
For OpenAI, the partnership opens the door to one of the largest consulting networks in the world. IBM Consulting Advantage already reaches almost 150,000 consultants globally.
IBM says the platform has supported more than 150 completed projects. The company also claims it has boosted consultant productivity by up to 50%.
IBM later added an AWS version of the platform. This suggests the company is trying to offer more flexibility for different client systems.
The financial numbers behind the deal are large. IBM’s generative AI revenue passed $12.5 billion in 2025.
IBM Consulting alone brought in more than $21.1 billion in revenue that year. This shows why AI tools have become a growing part of IBM’s business.
The cybersecurity piece of the deal is not brand new. IBM joined OpenAI’s Daybreak Cyber Partner Program back in June.
That program uses OpenAI’s models to detect and confirm software vulnerabilities in customer systems. On August 10, OpenAI updated the Daybreak program with new models built specifically for consulting firms like IBM.
GPT-5.6 will now be built into IBM’s broader AI strategy through Consulting Advantage. This gives IBM’s clients direct access to OpenAI’s latest technology through IBM’s existing consulting teams.
For OpenAI, the deal provides a wide channel to deploy its models across major industries. The partnership was confirmed through IBM’s newsroom announcement on August 13, 2026.
